Joseph Brooks’ son convicted of murder

The son of late Oscar-winning composer Joseph Brooks has been found guilty of killing his fashion designer girlfriend. Nicholas Brooks faces 25 years to life behind bars for strangling and drowning Sylvie Cachay in the bathtub of their hotel room in New York City’s Soho House on 9 December, 2010.
The 27 year old put his face in his hands as the verdict was read in a Manhattan court on Thursday (11Jul13), while his sister broke down in tears and Cachay’s friends cheered.
The defence attorney tried to argue 33-year-old Cachay was under the influence of drugs and had drowned accidentally, while prosecutors maintained Brooks choked her because she was ending their relationship.
Evidence proved Cachay suffered neck bruising and burst blood vessels in her eyes, and a medical examiner ruled her death was caused by force, according to the Associated Press.
Brooks will be sentenced on 26 August (13).
