‘MADtv’ Canceled … Finally!

Fox has mercifully canceled one of its longest-running shows, MADtv — perhaps after someone alerted the network that it was still on the air!

The Saturday night sketch-comedy series enjoyed sporadic success during its 14-year run, but ultimately it was never a ratings threat to its timeslot enemy Saturday Night Live, which has been around for more than twice as long.

This season, for example, SNL’s viewership has been nearly four times that of MADtv.

MADtv co-creator David Salzman admitted to the Hollywood Reporter that SNL was “the greatest of its type of all time,” but also called his show “the only success in the 21-year history of Fox’s late night.”

Salzman said MADtv might not be gone for long, however, as he is actively shopping it to other networks and outlets: “There’s a long list of parties that have called us, including a few very recently, and we’re going to start conversations with them very shortly.”

Fox reportedly decided not to renew MADtv when production costs became too high given the show’s low ratings.
