The Father of the Bride star grew so overwhelmed with requests at press events, the funnyman printed business cards inked with his signature and the words, “This certifies that you have had a personal encounter with me and that you found me warm, polite, intelligent and funny.”
But Martin admits he abandoned the time-saving gimmick once he noticed the disappointed looks from his followers, who were hoping for a more personal experience.
He explains, “I did do that once and people think I still do it… I thought it was kind of funny. I had this card made up… I did this for, like, six months in the ’80s and I found people didn’t quite get it… so I gave it up.
“I realised that when people ask for an autograph, what they really kind of want is a little encounter; to find out what you’re really like in 30 seconds.”
