Matt Waters | 1995
Matt Waters, a retired Navy Seal, becomes a science teacher at an inner-city Chicago high school in his old neighborhood. Upon his arrival, he learns that Bayview High School, with its security guards and metal detectors, is not the school he remembered. The pupils face problems involving gangs, racism, drugs, sexuality and teen pregnancy. Matt's science class is home to Flea Decker, a bright kid suspended between doing the right thing and joining the wrong crowd; Jack Tisdale, a football player who acts out at school as a result of the physical abuse he receives at home; and Angela Perez, who struggles to meet the needs of her poor family while hiding a shameful secret -- she can't read. Additional class members include Angela's best friend, Russ Achoa, who is conflicted because he is gay, and the rich Chloe Drescher, who comes in second to her parents' busy social life. On faculty are Matt's old friend, Charlie Sweet, the gym teacher, and Nicole Moore, an attractive African Studies teacher.
