‘Men in Trees’ Star Anne Heche Gives Us a Lesson in Love

She wrote the book on relationships, but even Men In Trees’ Marin Frist could use a lesson or two in the love department. We’ve watched the best selling author and radio host, played by Anne Heche, go through a gamut of romance trouble with her boyfriend Jack (James Tupper), including the return of his pregnant ex-girlfriend and his recent decision to leave town on a marine biology expedition.

Just in time for the return of Men In Trees, which returns to ABC Feb. 27 at 10:00 pm, Heche (who found romance on set with her co-star James) gives us a lesson on life and love based on her experiences both on screen and off.

Lesson #1: You’ve gotta have chemistry
“It’s like [show creator Jenny Bicks had] a little bit of magic dust in the chemistry of casting…One of the great things about what I’ve learned about working with James [is] how enthusiastic people are about seeing Jack and Marin on screen… It’s so lovely that people love watching us so much.”

Lesson #2: Family comes first
“Well, the greatest thing of the writers’ strike is that I was able to start taking my son to school, which is great. It’s been such a marvelous time. We’ve been going to the park and playing football and baseball and having picnics and playing the Wii. [Homer] said, “Mommy, mommy, I don’t want you to work for a hundred gazillion infinity days”…[James and I] have been able to share just some really beautiful, beautiful times with [Homer] and cook some dinners and be reconnected to our friends.”

Lesson #3: Communication is key
James, of course, Mr. TV star turned into Mr. Movie Star and went to his first audition for a movie with Richard Linklater and got it and has now been shipped off to London…Homer and I Skype each other when we’re not together and so Skype has become a very important part of keeping communication open and fortunately, even in the Isle of Man where James is shooting right now, he has Skype so we do video conferencing every day.”

Lesson #4: Seek a well rounded life
“The cast really misses each other…we’re now just taking this time together and I think all of us–all of the actors as we were talking, need time to fill ourselves up with reading books and going to movies and sleighing and doing sports and like re-giving to our bodies because when you do a TV show and play the same character each week, so consistently, you know, we all want to fill up…We’re going to cooking classes and doing more yoga and getting ourselves into a space where we’re ready to go back filled up for the next season so that we have more life experience to give to these characters and, hopefully, will be giving for the next years to come.”

Lesson #5: Hope is part of the journey
“I’ve gone through my ups and downs certainly in life, but I really wanted to play a character who had thought she had it all together and had to begin again… So, to me, this hopeful show has been about what I’ve discovered in my life through my difficult journey that the people around me have loved me through everything that I’ve gone through and that’s the hope that is in the center of this show in every episode that we do. That we can find the place that is peaceful and supportive of what we’re doing.”

Lesson #6: Stay grounded
“I think when she seen–when you think you know a lot, you’re up in a kind of lofty place with yourself and when you come down, I think the change that she’s made is that she’s completely been grounded in this earth, and, of course, it’s the beautiful place where we shoot it in Elmo, Alaska, that is a part of her journey. She’s become a part of the ground and she now sees from a much clearer, clearer more humble place.”

Lesson #7: Some things are worth waiting for
“I have found that people are very upset when Jack and Marin aren’t together, and I think that’s part of the beauty of the writing that people have gotten so engaged in our relationship and their hearts wanted us to be together…[but] I’m not sure if marriage is what Jack and Marin should do.”
