Merle Haggard and Max Barnes’ sons team up to re-record fathers’ classic

The sons of songwriting partners Merle Haggard and Max Barnes have teamed up in the studio to re-record their fathers’ hit Way Back in the Mountains.
Country Music Hall of Famer Haggard and Nashville Songwriters Hall of Famer Barnes were longtime friends and now their kids, Marty and Max, Jr have continued the family ties by reworking the classic country song for Barnes’ new album I Can Sleep When I’m Dead.
Merle and Max wrote the song in the 1990s among others, such as the Haggard hit In My Next Life.
Marty Haggard reveals his dad spoke most nights on the phone when they weren’t hanging out together at the Haggard ranch, writing songs and “enjoying each other’s company”.
The two friends even formed a publishing company together.
Merle Haggard died last year (16).
