Moonlight & American Honey lead Independent Spirit nominations

Moonlight and American Honey will lead all nominees at the 2017 Independent Spirit Awards after landing six nods apiece.
Oscars Best Picture frontrunner Manchester by the Sea picked up five mentions, while Other People, Jackie and Free in Deed racked up four nods each as the nominations were announced on Tuesday (22Nov16).
American Honey, Moonlight, Manchester by the Sea and Jackie will all face off in the Best Feature category, alongside Chronic, while the Moonlight cast will be the recipients of the Robert Altman Award, which is given to an ensemble.
Writer-director Barry Jenkins is also up for Best Director and Best Screenplay. The film has landed Best Cinematography and Best Editing nominations too.
As well as Best Feature, American Honey will compete for Best Director (Andrea Arnold), Best Cinematography, and Best Editing, while the movie’s Sasha Lane is up for Best Female Lead, Shia LaBeouf for Best Supporting Male, and Elvis Presley’s granddaughter Riley Keough for Best Supporting Female.
Jackie’s Pablo Larrain, Loving’s Jeff Nichols and Certain Women’s Kelly Reichardt will compete with Arnold and Jenkins for the Best Director prize.
The Best Male Lead category will be a fight between Casey Affleck (Manchester by the Sea), David Harewood (Free In Deed), Viggo Mortensen (Captain Fantastic), Jesse Plemons (Other People), and Tim Roth (Chronic), while Natalie Portman (Jackie), Annette Bening (20th Century Women), Isabelle Huppert (Elle), and Ruth Negga (Loving) will compete with Lane for the Best Female Lead trophy.
The Independent Spirit Awards will be held in Santa Monica, California on 25 February (17).
