MTV 2002 Movie Awards Likes “Rings”

The oh-so-hip MTV 2002 Movie Awards favors small Hobbits with hairy feet.

Variety reported the fantasy epic Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring took in six nominations, including best picture, male performance (Elijah Wood), villain (Christopher Lee), action sequence, breakthrough male performer (Orlando Bloom) and best fight (Christopher Lee vs. Ian McKellen).

Rounding out the best picture list were the tense war drama Black Hawk Down, the kinetic The Fast and the Furious, the perky Legally Blonde and the endearing Shrek.

Competition for Wood in best male performance include Russell Crowe for A Beautiful Mind, Vin Diesel for The Fast and the Furious, Josh Hartnett for Pearl Harbor and Will Smith for Ali.

Actresses nominated for best female performance are Kate Beckinsale for Pearl Harbor, Halle Berry for Monster’s Ball, Angelina Jolie for Lara Croft: Tomb Raider, Nicole Kidman for Moulin Rouge and Reese Witherspoon for Legally Blonde.

The nominations were determined by a poll of MTV and MTV2 fans, as will the winners, via phone and online balloting.

The MTV 2002 Movie Awards will be presented June 1 at the Shrine Auditorium in Los Angeles and will air on MTV June 6 at 9 p.m.
