Fresh of it’s success with The Wiz Live! this past December, NBC has decided to keep a good thing going by bringing some of our favorite musicals to television. The network’s latest musical pick is Hairspray! The musical is set in Baltimore, Maryland during the 1960’s and brings up questions of race, segregation and even body positivity. With an extraordinary soundtrack, and iconic dance moves, this news could not come at a better time. Back in 2007, New Line Cinema brought the fun loving musical to the big screen which starred newcomer Nikki Blonsky and Hollywood veteran John Travolta. It’s definitely time for us to belt out “You Can’t Stop the Beat” at the top of our lungs again. Hairspray Live! will be NBC’s fourth live musical production, and since they’ve assembled a team of Tony award winners for this adaption, we just know it’s going to be genius. (Provided they bring in the prefect cast of course.) Director Kenny Leon, who brought us The Wiz Live! will be returning to this directors chair. Also, Hairspray alums, which include choreographer Jerry Mitchell and script adapter Harvey Fierstein, (who won a Tony for playing Edna Turnblad on Broadway) are also set to join the project. Until then, you have most of the year to catch up on all of the music and choreography.
Hairspray Live! will air on NBC Wednesday, December 7, 2016 at 8PM ET.
