Synopsis

An in-depth look at four New York City public defenders as they fight for the rights of the poor and the powerless. The four public defenders are: Sidney Lester, who has a caseload of some 100 young clients awaiting trial; Kweku Vanderpuye, the son of an African immigrant who has witnessed the murders of Haitians and Africans at the hands of the police and has dedicated his life to social justice; Natasha Lipiner-Giresse, who sees her job as a social worker more than of a lawyer to her clients; and David Kuhn, a former Harvard quarterback who sees his role as legal advocate for the poor, navigating his clients through the complicated labyrinth of the New York City criminal justice system.
