“One Million Moms” Is Boycotting ABC’s ‘The Muppets’ Because It Is “Perverted”

One Millions Moms has announced they are boycotting ABC’s The Muppets due to the show’s “perverted nature.” In a full statement released online, the group said,

“1MM suspects there are going to be a lot of shocked moms and dads when they discover that the family-friendly Muppets of the 1970s are no more. It appears that no subject is off limits. ABC’s new Muppet Show, airing on Tuesday evenings at 8:00 pm ET/7:00 pm CT, is not what Jim Henson imagined and created. The new show is aimed at a mature, modern audience and addresses subjects not suitable for family viewing.”

However, Jim Henson always envisioned The Muppets as a show that would be able to appeal to both adults and children, using satire to engage in social commentary while still being able to entertain. Henson once said, “I believe that we can use television and film to be an influence for good; that we can help to shape the thoughts of children and adults in a positive way.” As the AV Club pointed out, one of the original pilots for The Muppet Show was titled “Sex and Violence” and dealt with the proliferation of both topics on television in the 1970s.
