Classic romantic comedy Roman Holiday is being developed into a stage musical featuring the music of Cole Porter.
The production, titled Roman Holiday – The Cole Porter Musical, will debut at the SHN Golden Gate Theatre in San Francisco, California in the spring of 2017, with hopes for a Broadway transfer later that year.
The show is based on the 1953 film of the same name, featuring Gregory Peck and Audrey Hepburn, who won a Best Actress Academy Award for her performance as Princess Ann. The movie also won Oscars for Best Screenplay and Best Costume Design.
In the film Hepburn played a royal princess who escapes the confines of her life to join an American reporter (Peck) for a romantic day together sightseeing in Rome.
The stage adaptation of Roman Holiday will feature a score of Porter standards including Night and Day, Ev’ry Time We Say Goodbye and Easy to Love, according to Variety.
The musical’s book will be co-written by Irving Berlin’s White Christmas writer Paul Blake, and veteran TV comedy writers Kathy Speer and Terry Grossman.
Blake will co-produce Roman Holiday with his partner Mike Bosner. The duo previously found success with Tony-winning production Beautiful: The Carole King Musical.
