Ryan Murphy Says Lady Gaga’s Character Is The Original ‘American Horror Story’ Supreme

Lady Gaga’s character on American Horror Story: My Roanoke Nightmare  might seem like a sex-crazed, woodland entity, but she’s so, so much more than that. According to the show’s creator Ryan Murphy, Gaga is actually the original Supreme, and she will return in a future season that involves the history of witchcraft in America. Do we smell American Horror Story: Salem? Please!

For those of you who don’t remember, the Supreme was what they called the head witch in Coven. She was the most powerful witch and in charge of watching over the coven until a younger witch took her place. In season three, Jessica Lange’s character, Fiona Goode, was the Supreme and grew weaker throughout the season until her daughter Cordelia (played by Sara Paulson) stepped up.

Murphy hopes to return to the idea later, in a season where Lady Gaga’s crazed character can be fully explored.

“We’re going to do a return to the ‘Coven’ season in some capacity,” he told The Huffington Post. “So that character will be further explored then.”

We do know that the women from Coven are descendants of the Salem witches from the late 17th century. Apparently, witches were around much longer than that because the Roanoke colony disappeared in the late 16th century. In a recent episode, we learned that Gaga’s witch character was born in England and is a descendant of Druids and Romans who worshiped “the old gods.”

Murphy admits that Gaga’s character doesn’t get much screen time this season because the singer didn’t have as much time to devote to the series due to her album’s schedule.

“I knew that this character was important to the mythology of the show, and I really wanted her to play that character,” he said.

According to Murphy, the “return-to-Coven season” won’t be season seven. Seven is scheduled to connect to Freak Show, but as far as a witch-related, season three throwback, they’re “definitely going to do it.”
