Story based on the adventure classic of the foppish English nobleman who masquerades as the dashing Scarlet Pimpernel to rescue French aristocrats during the Reign of Terror. Chauvelin, head of the French secret police, is sent to England to try and discover the identity of the Scarlet Pimpernel. He is invited by Percy Blakeney to be his guest at Blakeney Hall, where Chauvelin tries to enlist the aid of Marguerite (Percy's wife and Chauvelin's former lover) in his quest for the Pimpernel. Chauvelin threatens to arrest Marguerite's brother Armand if she does not help him. Relunctantly, she supplies Chauvelin with the address of a safe house in Paris. Marguerite then remembers her husband's mysterious disappearances, and suspects he is probably the Pimpernel. She rushes to Paris to warn Percy, but she is imprisoned as bait to capture the Pimpernel. Marguerite is brought before the revolutionary tribunal where she is sentenced to death. The Pimpernel saves her, leaving Chauvelin in disgrace.
