Unless you are into politics (or speak Spanish) there was absolutely nothing on television last night. Thanks to President Obama taking over the airwaves with his annual State of the Union address, all of the broadcast networks skipped original programming and showed the speech instead. So who won the ratings? Univision, the only network not to show the speech.
In a bold move, the Spanish-language network decided to air it’s regularly scheduled programming (shows Amores Verdaderos, Por Ella Soy Eva, and Amor Bravio) and ended up winning the key 18-to-49 demographic that advertisers crave like John Boehner craves a regime change. Still, it only drew in 3.8 million viewers, which wouldn’t put it in first place in terms of total eyeballs watching the screen. There were far more people watching the speech, but since it was spread out over so many channels Univisioin’s counter programming won the day.
It’s a shame the channel didn’t show the reaction to the address by Florida Senator Marco Rubio. The liberal-leaning Florida-based channel has a long-standing feud, and they probably would have salivated over his much ridiculed water break.
Interest in the speech was down across all the networks. CBS had the most viewers with 6.9 million but NBC had the highest number of younger viewers. Fox came in last in both respects, with only 2.5 million who don’t know that Fox has a whole channel devoted to news tuning in.
