‘Stranger Things’ Officially Renewed — Here’s Everything We Know About Season 2

Yes! Yes! Yes! All of our ’80s horror dreams are coming true (well, at least the ones that don’t involve Freddy Krueger). Stranger Things has officially been renewed for season two! Praise Saint Barb!

We’ve had our speculations about what season two will hold for the show, which, let’s be honest, left lots of open-ended questions. What happened to Eleven? Is she actually the monster? What is going on with Will? What does Nancy see in Steve (seriously). Will Barb get justice?

We’ve been reeling since we watched the last episode (all but a few hours after we watched the first one because, honestly, we watched the whole season in one sitting). Thankfully, the Duffer Brothers have given us a few details about what’s going to happen now that the show’s officially a go for season two. The brothers spoke to Entertainment Weeklyand dished some pretty major details that have us so, so excited to dive back into the Upside Down.

Check out the trailer for season two above, and here’s everything we know about season two.

The story is pretty much picking up where it left off.

Rumors floated around the Internet about Stranger Things becoming an anthology like American Horror Story, but that was never actually in the cards. The Duffers did toy with the idea of setting the story a decade or so in the future, but for now, they’re sticking with the ’80s. The story resumes in 1984.

“I don’t think we ever thought anthology,” said Ross Duffer. “I think we talked like a larger time jump where the kids are older now and it’s a different decade. That’s something we batted around from the very beginning. But for us, there’s still more story here [in the 1980s], there’s still things that are unresolved.”

We still don’t know what’s happening with Eleven.

The brothers wouldn’t reveal what happened to Eleven. Apparently, they’re not totally sure yet.  “We don’t know about Eleven,” said Ross Duffer. “We leave that up in the air.” Come on! Don’t do this to us!

We’re getting new characters.

Four new characters will be cropping up in season 2. “There’s going to be a lot of new and interesting dynamics that we didn’t see in season 1,” said Matt Duffer. Way to leave us hanging, again!

Season two is influenced by James Cameron.

The Duffers have always been looking at season two as more of blockbuster sequel than a continuation of a series. Matt Duffer admitted that James Cameron and his knack for sequels was a major influence in the upcoming season — especially how his sequels always feel different from the original films.

“I know movie sequels get a lot of s—, but the ones we look up to aspire to pivot and do something different,” he explains. “There’s Temple of Doom, Aliens, Terminator 2. I guess a lot of this is James Cameron. But he’s brilliant. And I think one of the reasons his sequels are as successful as they are is he makes them feel very different without losing what we loved about the original. So I think we kinda looked to him and what he does and tried to capture a little bit of the magic of his work.”

The show expands beyond the small town of Hawkins.

This one’s really exciting! The adventure expands beyond the tiny Indiana town that started it all. This leaves so much room for different story lines that we can’t fathom what the brothers are going to come up with. “We will venture a little bit outside of Hawkins,” says Matt Duffer. “I will say the opening scene [of the premiere] does not take place in Hawkins.”

We see more of the Upside Down.

One of the most interesting parts of season one was the whole concept of the Upside Down — the alternate dimension where Will was trapped and Barb was slaughtered. Thankfully, the Duffers are going to spend season two exploring that realm a whole lot more. Matt Duffer even admits that they “just peeled back the curtain” and only revealed a tiny bit of what the Upside Down holds. There’s so many questions that need to be answered.

“We obviously have this gate to another dimension, which is still very much open in the town of Hawkins. And a lot of questions there in terms of, if the Monster is dead, was it a singular monster? What else could be out there? We really don’t go in there much until they go in to find Will at the end. So we’ve opened up this doorway, and to us it’s exciting to talk about, like, what else is behind there? There’s a lot more mystery there to be solved.” said Ross Duffer.

Season 2 is going to be longer.

The second season is going to be nine episodes — that’s one whole episode longer than season one. Basically, we can still binge-watch it in a day if we really want to!

Season 2 of Stranger Things will premiere on Netflix in 2017.
