Synopsis

The whale ship "Essex" met its doom in the middle of the Pacific Ocean in 1820 when it was rammed by a sperm whale, causing it to sink. Adrift in lifeboats, the surviving crew faced storms, thirst, illness and starvation, and were eventually reduced to cannibalism before the few remaining survivors were rescued. Their story would provide the inspiration for Herman Melville's novel, "Moby Dick."
