The Lost Battalion
True story of a World War I expeditionary unit of the 77th Division (308th Battalion) tragically victimized by its own deep advance into German-occupied territory during the decisive battle of the Argonne. Due to a terrible break in communications, Major Charles Whittlesey and his more than 500 troops find themselves separated from their allies, confronted by entrenched German troops on all sides, while also bombarded by friendly fire from American artillery confused over their position. Major Whittlesey, a Harvard-educated attorney, led his men on a defiant five-day defense, despite precious little food, water or ammunition, and the final loss of more than 200 of his soldiers. Upon their amazing return to Allied lines, Whittlesey was promoted to Lieutenant Colonel and later awarded the Congressional Medal of Honor.
