The Night Manager was among the winners at the BAFTA TV Craft Awards on Sunday night (23Apr17).
The TV drama, which was adapted from John Le Carre’s book of the same name and starred Tom Hiddleston and Hugh Laurie, picked up gongs in the Editing: Fiction and Sound: Fiction categories at the ceremony, which honours Britain’s behind-the-scenes TV talent.
The hit miniseries wasn’t the only programme to win double awards at the event however, as The Crown also left with two prizes – for Costume Design and Special, Visual & Graphic Effects.
The Crown has been a massive hit for Netflix and stars Claire Foy and Matt Smith as Britain’s Queen Elizabeth II and Prince Philip when they were younger. The cast are currently shooting the second season of the drama, which is due to be released on the streaming site in November (17).
National Treasure, which starred Robbie Coltrane as a TV star accused of rape and Julie Walters as his embattled wife, took home the Director: Fiction and Original Music awards.
Meanwhile, Sally Wainwright was presented with the Writer: Drama gong for Happy Valley. The crime series was an even bigger hit when the second season aired last year (16), and the prize marks the fifth BAFTA win for Sally, and her third in that category.
On the comedy side, Stefan Golaszewski received the Writer: Comedy award for Mum, which stars Lesley Manville as a woman attempting to move on after the death of her husband. The award was the second BAFTA win for Stefan.
The Cities episode of David Attenborough’s documentary Planet Earth II also had a successful evening, taking home the Photography: Factual and Sound: Factual awards.
Director Mahalia Belo was presented with the Breakthrough Talent award for her work on TV movie Ellen, while prop master Bobby Warans was recognised with the BAFTA Special Award for his contribution to the industry.
Following the ceremony, Bobby, who has worked on shows including Absolutely Fabulous and French and Saunders, took to Twitter to express his gratitude over the win, writing: “Thank you BAFTA what a great honour…”
