A stage musical version of cult 1983 movie The Outsiders is heading for Broadway.
The production will premiere in 2020 at Chicago’s Goodman Theatre ahead of a hoped for New York run.
Inspired by S.E. Hinton’s groundbreaking 1967 novel, Francis Ford Coppola’s film introduced the world to Rob Lowe, Tom Cruise, Patrick Swayze, and Emilio Estevez.
The musical will be directed by Liesl Tommy, who recently signed on to take charge of the upcoming Aretha Franklin biopic, starring Jennifer Hudson as the late soul legend.
Set in Tulsa, Oklahoma, in the late 1960s, The Outsiders follows the exploits of a teenage gang.
