Tom and Karen Lowry, along with their children -- 16-year-old Liz and 10-year-old Widdy -- have just moved from New York City to their new home in the small northern California town of Placerville, where they adopt a homeless golden retreiver, whom they name Pilot. They soon find out that Pilot is pregnant and when the puppies are born, the Lowrys' lives are turned upside down. Tom also has to deal with the added pressure of a new job, annoying co-workers, and a high-powered client. The family names the puppies, loves them and gets to know them as individuals. All the puppies are special, and the Lowrys set out to find a home for each of them. After the pups are adopted by some colorful people, the family decides that they can't live without them and sets out to get them all back.
