Synopsis

Telefilm based on the adventure classic of the foppish English nobleman who masquerades as the dashing Scarlet Pimpernel to rescue French aristocrats from death during the Reign of Terror. The 10-year-old Dauphin -- heir to the French throne -- is under the control of Robespierre but is kidnapped by a sinister masked character. As the Pimpernel (aka Percy Blakeney) gets close to witnesses who might identify the Dauphin's kidnapper, they are killed before they can reveal the truth, frustrating the Pimpernel's attempts to save the French royal bloodline. Meanwhile, Sir Percy and his wife Marguerite have a spectacular row in public and she storms off to France. Robespierre isn't convinced that she has turned her back on England for good, but Chauvelin, head of the secret police, delights in plotting how to win back his former lover.
