Them Are Us Too singer Cash Askew among dead in Oakland fire

Singer Cash Askew has been identified as one of the victims of the warehouse fire in Oakland, California.
The 22-year-old musician starred alongside Kennedy Ashlyn in emerging band Them Are Us Too.
She was one of 33 people reported to have died as a result of the fire on Friday (02Dec16), in a warehouse known as the Ghost Ship, a performance space and artists’ studio which was hosting a concert by electronic group Golden Donna and six other acts.
The news was confirmed in a press release from the band’s label and management team, which also paid tribute to the young singer, whose debut album, Remain, was released to critical acclaim on Dais Records, in 2015.
“Cash Askew was an absolutely loved and treasured member of the Dais Records family,” the statement read. “We were in awe of her talent, her gentle kindness, and her creative momentum… her passing is an excruciating loss that we may never fully process or recover from.”
Cash’s past touring mates Wax Idols also posted a tribute to the singer on Instagram, writing, “I cannot find words adequate enough to describe what a loss this is. Not just to me personally & us as a band, but to everyone who ever met Cash or felt the gentle, transcendent power of her existence, her music & her energy.
“She was an angel of light in a very sick, f**ked world. She was only 22 years old. She deserved better. Everyone we lost in that fire deserved better. This is f**king gut wrenching & we will never be the same….”
Recording artist Joseph Matlock is also reportedly among the many artists and musicians that are still unaccounted for.
According to Oakland fire chief Teresa Deloach Reed between 50 and 100 people were inside the venue when the fire started late on Friday. She confirmed to the BBC that there were no sprinklers and the only exit from the second floor was a makeshift stairwell. It is unclear what caused the fire at the converted warehouse.
