True Blood‘s marketing team isn’t foolish — they know fans are about as thirsty for TB knowledge as a dying man in the desert is thirty for water. So they knew releasing another teaser for the fifth season would only heighten our curiosity even more — especially since it deals with the festering dynamic between vampire hottie Eric Northman (Alexander Skarsgard) and his progeny Pam (Kristin Bauer van Straten).
At the end of last season, their relationship became strained thanks to Eric’s temporary amnesia and his ever-growing love for Sookie (Anna Paquin). Oh, and the fact that she tried to blow Sookie sky high at Marnie’s Moon Goddess store probably didn’t help things either. And since Eric is pretty much the one and only person Pam genuinely cares about, it’s safe to say she’d do almost anything to get him back on her side. But would she release Russell Edgington (Denis O’Hare) from his cement grave in order to do so? Eric certainly seems to think she’s more than capable of such a scheme.
After all, Pam’s never made her dislike for Sookie unknown (understatement) and she knows Edgington would love nothing more than to kill her. It’d be the perfect way to get that pesky blonde out of her hair for good. Can you say, “motive?”
The clip only offers a brief look at their new relationship, but it’s enough to show just how much it’s changed — and not for the better. After accusing Pam of having a well-manicured hand in Russell’s return, he reveals to her that she’s no longer his confidant, and nor should she be his. “I trust no one…you shouldn’t either,” Eric remarks, and we see Pam cry actual tears, not blood! (I guess they add that part in later on).
So the good news is badass vampire Eric seems to be back (can I get a Hallelujah!), but the bad news is it could come at the cost of his usually touching comradery with Pam. But given that his poor little (un)beating heart has just been broken by Sookie’s rejection, he’s more than earned the right to blow off a little steam.
Then there’s that whole the-authority-wants-him-dead problem he’s going to have to worry about, aside from whatever revenge plan Edgington has in store. Hopefully his vampire sister Nora, who’s part of the Vampire Authority ruling council and scheduled to make an appearance in Bon Temps, will be able to help him out of at least one of these sticky situations, so we can get back to seeing Eric at his best: cocky, superior, and most importantly, shirtless.
Check out the brief clip below and let us know what you think. Did Pam really have something to do with Russell Edgington’s release?
True Blood returns Sunday, June 10, at 9 p.m. ET on HBO.
