With all that is going on in the world, it can be easy to forget all of the things that we can still be truly grateful for. Though it may sound silly, television can provide the perfect escape from some of the hardest aspects of life. It’s nice sometimes to simply tune out the world for a bit and indulge in other universes with characters who may or may not share the same concerns that we do. The holidays are the perfect time to cozy up with loved ones and get caught up in some the best shows that TV has to offer.
In a year that has been full of fantastic episodes, here are 13 TV characters that we are thankful for this year.
1. Rogelio De La Vega – Jane the Virgin
Jane the Virgin is a gem of a show, not just because of Golden Globe winner Gina Rodriguez, but also because of actor Jaime Camil‘s epic portrayal of telenovela star Rogelio De La Vega. Not only is Rogelio ridiculously hilarious, he is also an exceptional performer and he has mastered the use of the hashtag. Just remember never to ask him to wear peach, that he doesn’t pop in peach.
2. Jamie Fraser – Outlander
He’s a Scottish God, need we say anymore?! Not only is Jamie Fraser just beyond sexy AF, he’s a man before his time. He is a ride or die for his wife Claire, he speaks French, and he is basically fearless. Also, the man wears a kilt like no other.
3. Annaliese Keating – How To Get Away With Murder
No one said that we had to only be thankful for “good” characters. Emmy award winner Viola Davis‘s Annalise Keating should be praised for simply being one of the most ballsy female characters on television. Without any regard for other peoples’ thoughts, feelings or opinions, Annalise does what has to be done. She isn’t worried about being “nice” (and women shouldn’t be)! She’s out here living her black ass life, and getting hers while the getting is good.
4. Dev Shah – Master of None
Aziz Ansari has always been cool but his character Dev on his new Netflix show Master of None always keeps it 100. Dev isn’t here for your mansplaining or whitesplaining, and he’s going to let you know why. Life is a confusing complicated ball of goo, and Dev isn’t afraid to tell it like it is.
5. Chanel Oberlin – Scream Queens
Move over Regina George, Scream Queens’ Chanel Oberlin has proven that she is the Queen of mean. From her disgruntled line-up of minions, to her love of scalding hot pumpkin spice lattes, it’s no wonder she was unbothered when she burned Mrs. Beans face off in a bucket of hot grease. We were here for Chaneloween and for that alone we are thankful for her.
6. Jessica Jones – Jessica Jones
Jessica Jones is a super woman. She’s not some little girl who just discovered her powers, she’s the real deal. She is who she is, foul mouthed and all and she makes ZERO apologies for it. Jessica is a true woman of the 21st century. Also her sex life…..MY GOD!
7. Felicity Smoak – Arrow
Felicity might bring a lighter tone to Arrow, but that doesn’t mean home girl doesn’t keep it real. She’s not afraid to speak her mind, even if it is a tad word-vomity. She’s not a complete bad ass, but that’s totally not for lack of trying. Also she got the guy, but she refuses to let that define who she is.
8. Tyrion Lannister – Game of Thrones
Let’s just be real, Tyrion has been legend since the very beginning. From all the times he put Cersei in her place, and that time when he gleeful slapped Joffrey in the face, we’ve been rooting for the former hand of the king since the first season of GoT. Now that Tyrion has crossed paths with Daenerys Targaryen, we’re all going to learn just what he’s really made of. Let’s not all forget the time when Tyrion shot his evil daddy while he was taking a poo.
9. Caroline Forbes – The Vampire Diaries
Let’s just be clear here, after seven seasons of TVD, Caroline Forbes has had the most character growth on the show. No longer the annoying popular cheerleader, Caroline has become a force to be reckoned with. She can and will put you in your place, she owns up to her own bullshit, and she’s always ready to ride with her friends when something goes down. Caroline might not be perfect but she’s definitely amazing.
10. Cyrus Beene – Scandal
It’s true, Olivia Pope can handle a lot of ish, but this year the Scandal character we’re most thankful for is President Grant’s Chief of Staff and former homie Cyrus Beene. Cy has been ruthless from the beginning, willing to go out on a limb and fall on the sword for king (or POTUS) and country. He’s smart as a whip and doesn’t take shiz from anyone. Basically when it comes down to it, he should have been President. Cyrus is a monster who never had a leash and we live for it.
11. Cookie – Empire
From the moment Cookie stepped out of jail, she’s been shutting it down on Empire. Not only does Mama know how to make an exceptional entrance, she’s not afraid to speak her mind. Cookie demands what she deserves and nothing less. Also, have you seen her outfits?!
12. Jessica Huang – Fresh Off The Boat
Jessica plays zero games on FOTB. She might be a tad crazy, but she’s never afraid to stick up for herself, her family and what she believes, in. You’re never going to cross her and get away with it, because she ‘s way too clever for that. Jessica is one tough cookie, but that’s because she cares.
13. Diane – Black-ish
Diane or “the girl twin” on Black-ish is literally everything. She proves that little girls don’t have to be these ridiculous caricatures. She speaks her mind, stands up for herself, and can’t be bothered with people who waste her time. Diane might only be 6-years-old, but she knows exactly who she is and you’re simply going to have to deal with it.
