15 Bad-Ass TV Stars Who Hid Their Baby Bumps While Filming Their Shows

From CGI shots and awkward angles here are 15 bad-ass TV stars who hid their baby bumps while filming their shows.

1
Alyson Hannigan & Cobie Smulders on How I Met Your Mother

CBS
During the fourth season of the CBS hit, How I Met Your Mother the series producers had to get extremely creative. Both of the show's female leads Alyson Hannigan and Cobie Smulders were pregnant at the same time. Instead of trying to be subtle about the stars' growing bumps, HIMYM series creator Craig Thomas and the writers decided to be make as many jokes as possible. Hannigan's character Lily hid behind ridiculous objects including a globe and basketball racks, that became more and more absurd as the episodes continued. She even partook in a glorious eating contest that was supposed to explain her bump. Meanwhile, Smulders' character Robin was stuck in massive clothing while carrying large handbags. At one point she even walked around carrying everyone else's dry cleaning.  At least the duo had one another during these crazy few months.

Amy Poehler on Parks and Recreation
Amy Poehler, Parks and Rec, NBC, 050216
NBC
Amy Poehler was pregnant during the second season of NBC's Parks and Recreation, and since she was a producer and writer on the hilarious show, Poehler got everyone to work around her schedule. Writing her pregnancy into the show would have been absurd since Leslie Knope was all about her job back then, so instead, Poehler wore loose clothing. She also continued filming right into season three once season two wrapped so that she could have an extended break with her son. The moral to this story is that it pays to be the boss.

Claire Danes on Homeland
Claire Danes, Homeland, Showtime, 050216
Showtime
When you're a CIA agent and the star of your show, you really can't sit behind a desk and let the action occur around you. Therefore, when Claire Danes announced her pregnancy after the the first season of Showtime's mega-hit Homeland, the writers had to get super creative. The showrunners used a combination of camera angles, body doubles and CGI to make sure that Danes' character Carrie Mathison still looked in fighting shape. Still, all of the magical technology in the world did not make up for the rigorous shooting schedule of the series. Danes told The Hollywood Reporter, "As my baby progressed, the show got more action-packed. I was chained to a pipe, it was 4 a.m and I was seven-and-a-half months pregnant, and I was like, ‘This sucks’… At one point, the baby was on my sciatic nerve."  Danes also discussed how awful shooting sex scenes was while pregnant. That sounds pretty horrendous if you ask us.

Courteney Cox on Friends
Courtney Cox, Friends, NBC, 050216
NBC
Courteney Cox was pregnant during the final season of Friends. However, her character Monica was unable to conceive so the writers obviously could not write the pregnancy into the series. Therefore, they stuck to simply draping Cox in larger clothing and jackets. However, the Friends producers weren't exactly creative about it, and her belly bump could easily be seen, especially in the series finale.

Debra Messing on Will & Grace

NBC
Though Debra Messing's character Grace on NBC's iconic Will & Grace did get pregnant in the later seasons of the series, Grace was in no place to become a mother when Messing was actually pregnant. Therefore, the writers chose to write around the actresses growing belly. Though the costume department stuck Messing is large billowy clothing or had her character constantly lounging on the couch, her pregnancy was super obvious. She was absent for five episodes of season six, but that didn't stop the show from making hilarious jokes while she was there. Check out the season six blooper reel here. Seriously, it's perfection.

Ellen Pompeo on Grey's Anatomy

ABC
During the sixth season of Grey's Anatomy, Ellen Pompeo was pregnant, even though her character Meredith was not. Though medical scrubs hid her bump for awhile, eventually the writers gave Meredith a story line where she donated her kidney. That gave the actress some much needed time off. After all, it's not like there aren't a thousand other characters on Grey's.

January Jones on Mad Men

AMC
We were all shocked to see 1960's housewife Betty Drapper looking considerably more plump than usual during the fifth season of Mad Men. In reality, January Jones was eight months pregnant when the season began filming, but it wouldn't have made sense for Betty to also become pregnant. Therefore the writers got super creative and decided that she would start struggling with her weight. As a result, Jones has to sit through seven hours of prosthetics each day. Though most of the weight was false and Betty lost the weight gradually once Jones was no longer preggers, it was a shock for January Jones to see herself that way. Jones told The Hollywood Reporter that when she first saw herself, "on the air, {she} paused it, and went screaming into the other room.”

Julia Louis-Dreyfus on Seinfeld
Julia Louis Dreyfus, Seinfeld, NBC, 050216
NBC
Not everyone is as sensitive to women as they should be once they become pregnant. When Julia Louis-Dreyfus got pregnant during the third season of Seinfeld, Jerry Seinfeld told her, "Hey, I have a great idea. How about we write in this season that Elaine just gets fat?" Um SIR!!!! According to Dreyfus, she immediately burst into tears because automatically it felt like a death sentence. SMH!! Luckily that never happened, and instead Elaine wore a tone of large '90s coats and ended up going on an extended vacation with her psychotherapist-boyfriend at the beginning of the fourth season.

Keri Russell on The Americans

FX
Keri Russell and her The Americans costar Matthew Rhys are in a real relationship off-screen, and the couple is expecting their first baby together. Instead of doing anything insane like what went down on Homeland or Mad Men, The Americans showrunners Joe Weisberg and Joel Fields decided to just go back to some old faithfuls. For the latter half of the fourth season of the series, Russell's character Elizabeth wore a ton of coats, and carried a lot of groceries and laundry.  The series' producers still had to include a couple of CGI shots when they had to get rid of her bump entirely. (Ah, the wonders of technology.) Wiesberg told Vulture, "It's just happy news that you work around."

Kerry Washington on Scandal
Kerry Washington, Scandal, ABC, 050216
ABC
Scandal is another series that used some old faithfuls to hide their main star's pregnancy. When Kerry Washington was pregnant during the third season of the drama, the Scandal crew pulled out some epic coats, large bags, and strangely placed furniture to obscure the star's growing bump. Still, Washington told The Hollywood Reporter that filming while pregnant was physically grueling, "It was tough for me to even maintain Olivia's walk because of the changes.” Now that Washington is expecting her second child, we wonder how creative Scandal will get for season six. Already the series episode order has been shorten from 22-episodes to 16-episodes to give Washington a bit of a reprieve.

Kristen Bell on House Of Lies
Kristen Bell, House Of Lies, Showtime, 050216
Showtime
Talk about awkward! Like Claire Danes, Kristen Bell had to film some sex scenes on House of Lies while she was seven months pregnant with her first child. Her character Jeannie van der Hooven wasn't pregnant in the series, and one of her major story lines during the second season was that she had a sex tape leaked.  The show's producers used CGI, and shot Bell at the best angles possible to make her bump look non-existent. Bell joked about the scene on Conan saying, Adam Brody, her love-interest on the show “affectionately referred to our sex scenes as threesomes, because my belly was right on top of him." Luckily, when Bell was pregnant with her second child during season four, her character Jeannie was also expecting.

Sarah Jessica Parker on Sex and the City
Sarah Jessica Parker, Sex and the City, HBO, 050216
HBO
As much as Sex and the City was about sex and NYC, it was also about the glorious fashion. Sarah Jessica Parker learned that she was pregnant shortly after the fifth season of the series began shooting, and because babies were not in the cards for Carrie Bradshaw, the shows producers had to think on their feet fast. They had the wardrobe department make custom clothing for SJP to hide her growing bump, and because it was 2002 and her frame is so petite, you never thought anything else was happening. After all, who doesn't love a good tunic?

Tina Fey & Jane Krakowski on 30 Rock
Tina Fey, Jane Krakowski, 30 Rock, NBC, 050216
NBC
Though both Tina Fey and Jane Krakowski were pregnant back-to-back while filming 30 Rock  in 2011, the show's producers worked around both of their pregnant bellies. However, that didn't stop the iconic series from laughing at itself and how television deals with actresses getting pregnant in general. In season five’s “Christmas Attack Zone", Elizabeth Banks' character Avery gives an update on her show while holding a ham and hat in front of her torso.
