Tony Hawk producing new Nick Hornby skateboarding musical

Skateboarding icon Tony Hawk is developing author and screenwriter Nick Hornby’s book Slam for Broadway.
Ironically, Hawk features as a character in the book, which revolves around the world of skateboarding, and now he’s on board as producer and skate choreographer for an ambitious new musical.
He will be teaming up with Devo frontman Mark Mothersbaugh, who will write the music and lyrics, while SpongeBob SquarePants the Musical‘s Kyle Jarrow will cover the story.
The project was announced on Wednesday (16Jan19) by producers Anita Greenspan and Hawk and executive producer Adam Zotovich, who revealed the project should be on the stage for the 2020-2021 Broadway season.
Hornby’s novel revolves around a troubled London teenager, who navigates through life with the help of imagined conversations with his hero, Hawk.
The musical will be set in the U.S.
Meanwhile, Mothersbaugh’s music has been associated with skateboarding for some time – Devo tracks were featured in cult skate documentary Dogtown and Z-Boys and the band was inducted into the Skate Boarding Hall Of Fame in 2013.
