When Will This Cruel War Be Over? | 1999
Special based on the Scholastic book series that tells fictional stories about heroic young women during important periods in American history. A 14-year-old Confederate girl is forced to become an adult as she experiences love and loss during the Civil War.
In this fictional story set in the 1860s during the Civil War, Emma Simpson is a privileged 14-year-old growing up in the Confederate South. The family's comfortable life is a distant memory: with her father gone for more than two years and her brother having died in battle, the burden of maintaining the household has fallen on Melissa and her mother. Still, Emma remains optimistic, convinced that the Confederate cause is noble and will eventually triumph. But she is devastated when her mother suddenly falls ill and dies -- despite the support of relatives and her slave Iris, Emma finds it hard to maintain hope. When her home is commandeered by Yankee soldiers to be used as a hospital, Emma discovers a new inner strength. As she witnesses first-hand the horrific effects of battle on sick and dying Yankee soldiers, she wonders how she could have ever viewed war as noble. After the Civil war finally ends, Emma is a different person.
