According to Deadline, Debra Messing, of Will & Grace fame, just signed on to star in an NBC comedy featuring called Smash. The hour-long drama about putting together a Broadway musical about Marilyn Monroe is originally based on an idea from Steven Spielberg. Messing will play Julia, the show’s lyricist who’s weary about writing for a Marilyn Monroe-based musical, alongside the musical’s gay composer, Tom. The script comes from TV writer and playwright Theresa Rebeck.
Right now, there’s no word on who will star as Tom, but hey, Eric McCormack seems to be available. According to his IMDB, he recently voiced an animated TV series for Canada’s The Hub called Pound Puppies. So you know, maybe returning alongside Messing in an NBC television series wouldn’t be such a bad idea.
