Synopsis

Suzanne Sugarbaker, the former interior designer and beauty queen from Georgia, has inherited her husband's seat in the House of Representatives and moved to Washington, D.C. with her young adopted daughter Desiree, and her mentally disabled brother Jim. Because Rep. Sugarbaker is presumed to be a lightweight, her quickly assembled staff is a hard-luck group: self-serving top aide Natalie Hollingsworth, who came from the office of a congressman who had been sent to prison, is anxious to mold Suzanne in her own image; cynical press secretary Sissy Emerson, a former "Post" reporter who lost her job and whose name now appears on Washington's "loser lists;" and naive housewife-turned-receptionist Jennifer Malone, desperate for a job since her husband left her and her two sons for another woman.
