The California Gold Rush makes Jethro greedy, and he and his cousin, David, end up killing each other over a large chunk of gold. Margaret Light Shines goes in search of Jacob, finding love along the way. Jacob is reunited with Thunder Heart Woman. The Lakota suffer under a treaty with the US Government. The Civil War breaks out, claiming most of the Wheeler family living in Kansas, and leaving Clara Wheeler an orphan. Abe joins the Pony Express while his brother, Jacob Jr., goes to fight for the Union.
