Jacob and his family join a wagon train west to California. On the way, they face many hardships, including the deaths of two cousins. Jacob is injured and forces Thunder Heart Woman and the rest to leave him behind so they can make it California. After a long seperation, Jacob finds them again to find that Thunder Heart Woman has married Jethro. They seem so happy, he decides to not reveal himself, other than to give a gift to his son, Jacob Jr. Running Fox and Dog Star have conflicting views over whether to adapt to the ways of the white man. Running Fox takes his family away to attempt to gain an trade alliance with the white men, but in the end he comes to realize the importance of his heritage and returns to the Lakota.
