Robert James, a television news entertainment reporter, is trying to juggle the demands of raising his 5-year-old son with his ex-wife while building a new relationship with his girlfriend. After finalizing the paperwork for his divorce, Robert asks his son if he'd be willing to let he and his girlfriend marry.
Robert tries to bring the family together to celebrate Bobby Jr.'s birthday as a unit after Tia and Neesee try to best one another by planning separate birthday parties.
Tia gets jealous of Robert's ex-wife Neesee when she takes some of his closet space and discovers their joyous wedding video. Meanwhile, the contents of the tape provide some ammunition in a cusody argument for Bobby Jr.'s baby crib.
When Neesee becomes the new "Room Mom" at Tia's school and becomes chummy with Tia's best friend, Tia feels like her work life and home life are offering up too much Neesee. Meanwhile, when Robert interviews singer Beyonce Knowles, she starts asking him the in-depth questions.
Neesee reveals to Robert that she plans to maintain using his last name despite the divorce.
Robert starts to get a little jealous when hen Neesee starts dating her good-looking dentist, but tries to pretend he's only thinking of their son.
The station does a piece on Robert's home life, but even though he insists Neesee and Tia be in it, Neesee is edited out, at which point Bobby's Jr's classmates think she really is his nanny. Stung, Neesee then tells the school that Tia and Robert have no business dating since his son is a student and she, a teacher.
Tia moves in with Robert and Bobby Jr, only she discovers that Bobby Jr doesn't really want her living with them, but Robert is unable to make his son adjust to the arrangement, so Neesee steps in and tries to talk to him. Meanwhile, Jonelle moves into Tia's apartment.
Robert, Nessee, and Dirk's college friend Jonny comes to town after a recent divorce, but when things start to heat up between him and Neesee, Robert begins to express his discontent with the situation.
Robert and Tia panic when they think Bobby Jr. may have accidentally seen them have sex and, to make matters worse, drawn a picture of it. They further panic over the thought that he'll show the picture to Neesee.
When Bobby Jr catches Robert kissing Tia while dressed as Santa, he gets the idea that Robert really is Santa. Tia, meanwhile, is feeling tension between her and her visiting father.
Neesee is forced to balance the demands of her thriving catering business and Bobby Jr. when he starts acting out at home as well as with Robert at the TV station. Meanwhile, Dirk finds himself inexplicably attracted to the attorney of a hot megastar.
When Tia's oldest friend comes to visit Tia, Robert is unnerved, especially when he reveals that he wishes he was the groom-to-be. Meanwhile, Alex and Neesee invade Tia and Robert's kitchen space.
Neesee gets upset with Robert when she finds out he's been teaching Bobby Jr. the finer points of boxing. Meanwhile, Alex tries out a few techniques on her trainer, while Tia discovers that Jonelle is having trouble covering her rent.
Robert's old friend Jonny comes back to see Neesee, and Robert seems amazingly comfortable with the couple's romance. After having dinner out, Jonny decides on a whim to take everyone, including Dirk and Jonelle, to Las Vegas, which leaves Bobby in Turtle's hands. When Jonny accepts Neesee's marriage proposal in Vegas, however, the two quickly realize that Robert will have to be told.
When a woman shows up on his doorstep, Dirk learns that she is in fact his estranged brother, who had a sex-change operation. Meanwhile, Robert's mother comes for a visit and worries him when she suddenly collapses.
When Robert's sister Carmen comes for a visit and asks him for money, he knows it's going to another one of her quick-fix money scams, but when Carmen goes to Tia, the response is different. Tia accidentally gives Carmen money meant for Bobby Jr.'s well-being, which ends up putting the squeeze on a furious Neesee as well.
Robert tries to give Tia the elaborate wedding he thinks she really wants so he agrees to be in a car dealership's TV ad. Meanwhile, Bobby offers Neesee's engagement ring from Robert to a new crush.
Robert must quickly assemble a birthday party for Tia using Neesee and Bobby's help after realizing he's managed to forget the big day.
Robert and Neesee try to help Bobby get over his shyness in school by setting up a playdate with the school's most popular kid, only during the playdate, the boy's mother comes on to Robert. When, after the party, Robert discovers that Bobby's falling out with Alex's son was the cause of all that shyness, the two parents try to get their kids to make up.
Robert and Tia begin to have bad dreams which involve Neesee as their wedding looms near, making Tia realize she'll be stuck with Neesee forever.
