Attorney Patty Hewes represents a group of employees that are suing Arthur Frobisher after he sold his company and left his employees devastated. Hewes hires a new associate, Ellen Parsons, to help her as she tries to take down Frobisher. Ellen is unaware that her best friend, Katie Connor, is working for him.
Ellen convinces Katie to talk to Patty about testifying against Arthur Frobisher. However, Patty doesn't believe Katie's account of events and digs deeper learning that Katie covered up a pregnancy from a one-night stand. Meanwhile, Arthur contemplates having Katie killed to get rid of the problem and Patty gets information on Ellen and her boyfriend and then buys them a condo.
Patty receives a grenade in a package at her office, later Phil finds another one in the car and gets in a car crash. Kate continues to hide things from Ellen and Ellen struggles with the demands of her new job.
Patty gives Katie Connor a practice when Katy identifies a man her boyfriend, Gregory tells her was in the car with Frobisher on the night in question. However, it turns out to be a set-up and Gregory continues to withhold the true information about the night. Meanwhile, a patient's relative hits on David and threatens his relationship with Ellen.
Tom tells Patty he's received another offer and he's going to take it. Arthur wants to put more pressure on Patty to make the case go away. Patty is fired by the clients and in a surprise turn of events they hire Tom Shayes to represent them.
Ellen and Patty try to determine what Gregory knows and how to get him in. Arthur decides he needs a new strategy to save his family and his money and his reputation--he wants to write a memoir. David and Ellen have problems as Lila tries to become a part of his life.
When Patty asks Ellen if Tom offered her a job when he was going to start his own practice, she lies and says "no" to protect Tom. Later she regrets it and talks to Tom about them both going to Patty, but he tells her she can't and they make an alliance to trust each other.
With her witness missing, Patty needs a new strategy. She talks to one of the clients and tests him to see if he's helping Frobisher, when she learns that he is, she flips him. Meanwhile, Ellen must deal with personal issues when she learns that her father is facing a lawsuit for a car accident.
Gregory reappears and pays Katie a visit only to be killed in a hit and run orchestrated by Moore. Frobisher practices for his testimony, while he considers settling due to the information that Moore leaked to Ellen.
Patty takes Frobisher's deposition. Meanwhile, Ellen is put on the sidelines.
Patty comes to Ellen's house after looking over the information Ellen left for Patty after she was fired. Patty asks Ellen to talk to George Moore. He refuses to give her Frobisher, but tells her to meet him later and he'll give her someone else.
Patty calls Ellen after Ray kills himself in her office. Ellen continues to try to prove she didn't kill David.
Patty Hewes clears Ellen in David's murder and gets the tape from Ellen. She uses it to win convince Frobisher to settle and then turns it over to the D.A. Larry is upset over getting nothing from the settlement and nothing from Frobisher so he tracks him down and kills him. Ellen and Patty talk and she agrees to go back to work for Patty, after having talked to the FBI and agreeing to help them bring Patty down.
