The Senate plots and assinates Julius Caesar. As he dies, Caesar tells the gladiator, Tyrannus to protect his nephew, Octavius, whom he is naming as his heir. Mark Antony surprises the Senators as they try to quietly remove Caesar's body from Rome, whipping the crowd into a frenzy about the murder of Caesar. A vestal virgin protects Caesar's will, and is able to use to to reveal Octavius to be his true heir.
Octavius and Tyrannus are captured and imprisoned. Camane posts signs that proclaims Octavius to be Caesar's rightful heir, endangering her life by doing so.
Octavius and Tyrannus stay in Marc Antony's villa, but they clash over what is the proper course of action. Tyrannus wants to leave and meet up with the legion that belonged to the late General Magonius, but Octavius is coming to trust Antony and wants to stay amongst a large group of Caesar's supporters.
Mark Antony makes his claim on Rome, but both the Senate and the populace are very unhappy about this. Tyrannus finally makes it to Cyprus only to find that his wife is dead and his son has been adopted by a wealthy family that can give him everything he himself cannot.
Octavius decides to finally claim his birthright as emperor and challenges Marc Antony to battle. He is assisted by the legendary lost 3rd Legion. He also receives unexpected assistance when Tyrannus, why had aligned himself with Marc Antony in hopes to reclaiming his son, decides to throw in his lot with Octavius instead.
