Joan's efforts to catch up with William and tell him her real feelings continuously go awry. He ends up having a session of the mile high club with someone else on their plane to Los Angeles. Meanwhile, Lynn meets up with her birth father, while Todd and Toni continue to argue about whether or not Toni is really pregnant.
Toni's friends refuse to accept her claim that she is pregnant and insist on accompanying her to her doctor's appointment. When they learn that her pregnancy is for real, they apologize, as does Todd, who returns to look after her, but still isn't sure where their relationship is headed. Meanwhile, Maya gets herself in hot water with William after her poor showing at work is capped off by an anger-inducing book shill to Reverend Al Sharpton.
Maya's cousin Ronnie is hurt when Maya hires an agent and fails to acknowledge the part he's played in her success. Joan runs into William and Monica at a cafe, but a misunderstanding leads her to try and out-do them by hooking up with her own date, a dull shoe salesman. Meanwhile, morning sickness kicks in for Toni.
Joan gets an earful from William for neglecting to mention her plans to open a restaurant, which leads to the final straw in their fractured friendship, as she reprimands him for professing his love for her and then doing a 180 to reunite with Monica.
Toni tries to win back Todd when he returns to L.A. to give her a quarterly checkup, but he informs her he wants a divorce. When Joan suggests to Toni that she prepare to raise her child by herself, Toni questions the idea of having her child. Meanwhile, William accuses Joan of being a jealous ex when she tries to ruin his relationship with two concurrent companions.
Maya begins to further shirk her responsibilities as William's assistant when she learns that her agent has secured her a multi-book deal. After being fired, however, she learns that the publishing company has been bought and that her deal is being shelved, and William has already found a suitable replacement.
An unexpected visit from Joan's mother Carol creates some tension after Carol quickly begins to critique Joan's methods of doing business. Joan tries to end another conflict by buying William out of his share of the restaurant, but he refuses to accept the deal.
After Joan goes to the hospital with the fear that she's having a heart attack, she learns she's only had a stress episode. Joan's mother clears up the misunderstanding of why she was in a robe at William's house, but Joan still can't decide whether she's free of William or really wants to be with him. Meanwhile, Maya finds herself under attack when she regrettably decides to appear on Lynn's public access TV show.
Lynn prepares to meet her biological father, Ken, but her adopted dad comes into town as well, afraid of losing her. When Ken comes in with his wife, the couple end up doing whatever his wife wants, which leaves little time for Lynn. Meanwhile, Joan and William unsuccessfully attempt to set up a date with one another, while Todd attempts to avoid being served with Toni's divorce papers.
After much moral rationalization, an unsuccessful stint selling her book on the sidewalk, and an unhappy return to her old job as a legal secretary, Maya takes a job writing for a porn magazine, but is quickly able to quit when the Reverend Al Sharpton gives her book a major plug. Meanwhile, Toni decides to keep discussion of her pregnancy to a minimum, while Toni fumes after William goes home over Thanksgiving and leaves her behind.
William takes Joan on an impromptu holiday getaway to Puerto Rico, but a snowy layover in Cincinnati leaves them at a cheap motel instead. Meanwhile, Lynn, Toni, and Maya use the time apart from Joan to have a rule-free Christmas.
When Joan doesn't introduce William as her boyfriend, he begins to have the feeling that she is still pining for her former fiance, Brock.
After signing her divorce papers, Toni agrees to go out with a former love, but Maya tries to get Todd to step in, positive that Toni isn't quite ready to move on from Todd yet. Meanwhile, Joan gets jealous when she learns that her new chef is an old girlfriend of William's, but he tries to convince her that his ex really wasn't all that good in bed.
William readies himself for an intimate night with Joan after several months of solid dating, but Joan wants to plan out a romantic Valentine's Day evening. William grudgingly accepts the plan, but the two quickly decide to go back to being friends when they find it surprisingly difficult to make the intimacy work. Meanwhile, Toni, Lynn, and Maya decide to tell all during a solitary dinner out together.
Maya has a big book signing at which Joan, Lynn, and Toni read excerpts from the book, but when Darnell shows up for an autographed copy, a stunned and elated Maya comes to believe he wants to get back together with her, a belief which is not shared by the others. Meanwhile, following their split, Joan has troubles personally dealing with William.
Joan scrambles to meet the opening date for her new restaurant, J-Spot, and things get hectic as she tries to find a celebrity guest and loses her publicist in the process.
Lynn's brother, Matthew, comes to stay with her in order to go out on music auditions, but Lynn inadvertently manages to land a musical gig sought after by Matthew after he chokes at the audition and she nails it. Meanwhile, William tries to interpret a message from Maya, while Toni debates whether or not to devote part of her closet space to the baby's things.
Jabari takes the news of his father's remarriage badly and begins to act out. When all else fails, he runs away in hopes of getting his parents together again.
After Lynn hooks up romantically with her bandmate, Finn, she soon finds herself unable to handle an open relationship and the jealousy she feels when Finn is around other women. Meanwhile, Joan coaxes a reluctant William into attending Toni's baby shower, but when he loans her an heirloom crib, she interprets it as a gift, one which ends up re-gifted into the hands of Toni's soon-to-be ex-cleaning lady.
Toni is thrilled to be pampered by her visiting mother as her baby's due date approaches, but the thrill is quickly gone when she discovers that her mother is only in town to explore the possibility of an affair with an old flame. Meanwhile, Joan and William start to get nervous when their new restaurant, J-Spot, isn't packing in the customers.
Darnell is in a panic when he must find a band two days before his wedding, but Maya's suggestion that he use Lynn's band goes awry when Lena hates Lynn's music.
Maya confronts the fact tthat she is still in love with Darnell. Lynn admits how she really feels to Finn and quits the band. Toni gives birth and questions how much she really needs Todd.
