A man is presumed guilty of murdering the wife of a rich real-estate developer even after the charges against him are dismissed. Wanting to clear his name in the eyes of his family, friends and the public, he asks Mike for help finding “the real killer.” Mike in turn involves his new friends, Liz and Jamie, in the investigation he's carrying out. Marcellus manages to escape a brush with death with only a minor bullet wound, which isn't enough to keep him from participating in the investigation to catch his would-be assassin (David Vadim). The shooter, it turns out, is connected to a drug ring Marcellus and Mike busted a few years before. After Mike rescues a woman from three would-be rapists, she becomes crazed with fear at the thought of what could have happened and goes a step too far in trying to keep the thugs from harming anyone else. Meanwhile, Mike's good Samaritan act must be rubbing off as the typically self-interested Marcellus goes out of his way to improve conditions for a drug addict's 12-year-old son, whose life completely revolves around caring for his troubled dad. Mike tries to save a woman (Kelli Williams) being targeted by a sniper, but the reason why somebody wants her dead isn't immediately clear because she's suffering from amnesia. What is apparent, though, is that Liz doesn't take kindly to Mike's latest fare in need of personal assistance. After Mike gets ripped off for $84, a small-town cop (Robert Pastorelli) shows up in Philly to ask the cabbie for help tracking down the thief, who he says is an escapee from a mental hospital who poses a danger to the public. However, suspicions are cast on the truthfulness of his story when the accused woman is apprehended and she claims to have witnessed a murder that the police officer is covering up. Marcellus is sad to find that life for 12-year-old Cal Milton (Julito McCullum) hasn't gotten any easier since he was placed in a youth shelter. Now, instead of having to endure neglect from his drug-addicted father, Cal's struggling to defend himself against bullies. A young woman is found raped and strangled to death in the park, and the only clue police have to her identity turns out to be Mike's phone number written on her hand. Although Mike doesn't know who the victim is, he's sure Liz (Jacqueline Torres) does because she was the one who told the troubled girl how to contact him for help. A ruthless assassin (Titus Welliver) with a vendetta against Mike returns to Philadelphia and takes Mike Jr. hostage. In exchange for the boy, he wants Mike to find a Russian mob boss who's in hiding. Although Mike's been warned not to involve the police, he turns to Marcellus for help and has Liz comb the scene of the kidnapping for clues.
Mike's treated as a hometown hero after he fatally shoots a mugger in self-defense. While struggling to come to terms with this unwanted fame, he is served notice that he's being sued by the mother of the man who robbed him. Jamie (Matt Czuchry) is the victim of a hate crime when he and a friend are badly beaten by a group of strangers who assume that the two are gay. Mike urges Jamie to report the incident to authorities, but becomes disappointed by the handling of the case and decides to conduct his own investigation. Mike's godson receives a hero's welcome from family and friends when he returns home from serving in the Army National Guard in Iraq. However, the 25-year-old believes that it isn't much deserved and his war experiences throw him into a severe depression, which leads him to contemplate suicide. Mike, in turn, makes it his mission to help the young man bounce back and regain a positive outlook on life. In other happenings, Liz (Jacqueline Torres) considers getting romantic with her neighbor.
As a special favor to Liz (Jacqueline Torres), Mike helps a newly reformed heroin junkie, who is heartbroken because her newborn was kidnapped by her creep of a boyfriend and sold on the black market for $8000. Marcellus is more than willing to assist Mike with his search for the child, mostly because he's looking for a distraction from his troubles with Deborah and the thought of her being with another man. Mike fears for the safety of a female passenger, who disappeared after being dropped off at the strip club where she works, leaving a 12-year-old daughter behind at home. Mike's only chance of tracking down the woman is the cell phone she left behind in his cab. While stuck in a traffic jam, Mike recalls getting tangled up with a beautiful, rich woman (Jane Krakowski) whose feminine wiles he couldn't resist, despite his instincts not to. Mike meets this femme fatale after having helped save the life of her husband in an attempted hit by a hired killer.
