Susan's sister Lisa returns from school to confess to quitting and backpacking around Europe. When Tom agrees with her decision, he ends up on the wrong side of a family argument. Susan becomes jealous when Lisa's gay roommate seems to be attracted to Mary.

Money issues affect all as Chris tries to keep his job loss a secret, Susan believes that she and Tom have to think in the long term and Lewis moves out in lieu of having to pay rent.

Tom tries to get back on the family's good side by lendng Chris money to start a home remodeling business. Later, he is offered a job ghostwriting a book for a football player.
