JD makes it through his first day at a hospital full of odd characters with the help of his friend Turk even though his superiors Dr. Kelso and Dr. Cox give him a hard time.

JD tries to get a cancer patient to stop smoking. Turk is after Carla for a date. Elliot makes enemies with her coworkers by her mannerisms.

J.D. becomes jealous when Turk starts spending all his time with his new girlfriend.

Dr. Cox challenges his staff not to lose a single patient before his shift ends. Meanwhile, J.D. becomes infatuated with an unseen patient stuck in the MRI machine.

J.D. attempts to woo a former patient, but all his efforts are thwarted when he's repeatedly called into the hospital.

A new crop of medical students arrive and J.D. plans to make his student as miserable as he once was. Meanwhile, Elliot is partnered with the son of the hospital's Chief Executive Officer.

When a mean patient dies, J.D. worries that somehow he's to blame since he avoided the patient as much as possible. Meanwhile, Elliot and Turk discover that Dr. Kelso is hiding a musical past.

Dr. Cox's good friend, Ben, comes to the hospital after an accident with a nail gun. But when further tests point to leukemia, J.D. has to break the horrible news.

Dr. Cox has trouble dealing with his friend's illness. Turk is dismayed to learn that he is not the best surgical intern on the team.

Elliot and J.D. help an elderly patient with no medical insurance get an operation that he desperately needs.
