Meet the Malloy's, a family of Irish Travellers who rove the southeast United States. The father, Wayne, has a gift for lying and the desire to be more than a pick-pocket.
Wayne decides to go to a job interview with a local law firm intended for Howard Rich in order to maintain appearances. He soon discovers that his propensity for lying makes him the perfect attorney, one whom local jerk Hugh Panetta thinks would make a good fit with his company.
Wayne's first day at Panco has its highs and lows. First, he's forced into giving an impromptu speech, where he manages to win over his new employees.
Wayne and Dahlia are compelled to pull a scam on the attorney of dead Doug's ex-wife, who is pursuing the dead man for alimony payments; Cael is approached by some unscrupulous students who want him to help them break into the school so they can change their grades; Dahlia confesses to Wayne that she hates him even though she loves him and that she used crystal meth while in prison; Di Di bonds wi
Wayne struggles to develop a defense strategy in Panco's ongoing litigation and his lawyer act begins to stumble. Meanwhile, Dahlia stumbles into a job as a dental hygienist meant for the deceased Mrs. Rich; Cael works with sneaky student Brent to develop a fake ID ring; Ginny Dannegan tracks down the family and states her one demand: that her brother marries Di Di.
Wayne tries to negotiate with Hartley Underwood, whose arm was bitten off by an alligator and is suing Panco for building near the swamp in the first place. Meanwhile, Dahlia goes to work for Hal; Wayne is forced to make Ginny's dim brother his intern; Di Di gets arrested for possession, and it brings the family together; and, Dale reacts to learning that he's not going to be the head of the family by killing his dad.
Dahlia is compelled to go to Earl's funeral with or without the family. But the Malloy's know that if she returns to the Traveller's camp alone, she will be in big trouble, so, they decide to go with her.
The Malloy's concoct a scheme to deprive a very rich ex-ballplayer named Rudy Blue of some of his wealth in order to put back the money they stole from Hugh to pay back the Travellers' clan.
Wayne presses Hugh to become a company partner after getting money from Rudy Blue, but Hugh first wants to inspect his potential partner's home and family, so he insists that Wayne has a dinner party.
Wayne catches Dahlia standing over the toilet with the meth Chunky Kay left for her and misinterprets it to mean that she's using the stuff. Despite Dahlia's pleas to the contrary, Wayne snorts a large amount of the meth so that he can know what it's like and to show her how bad it looks.
Hugh goes on a meth-induced trip, leaving Panco and its problems to Wayne, who decides that this is the right time to assume the role of partner. But Wayne's ploy to further assume the lifestyle of a Buffer backfires, as it takes time away from his family and causes him to represent the firm in court against a lesbian couple suing for the right to live in a Panco home.
Doug Rich's best friend Pete comes calling and the Malloy's try to tell him he's come to the wrong house. Wayne and Dahlia must then spin a far more elaborate web to make the man believe his best friend wants nothing to do with him and has gone so far as to move away and not let anyone know his whereabouts.
Wayne and Dahlia desperately try to pull more scams on Peter Mincey, whose suspicions about their true identity can blow the family's entire arrangement.
