Molly Kagan's life of luxury comes tumbling down when her husband, Kenny, president of a movie studio, asks her for a divorce. Humiliated, she retreats to Malibu with her 3-year-old daughter.
Molly finds out that Lou has mysteriously gone missing. Then she learns that Sam is homeless. Joan is kicked out of rehab. Cricket learns that her husband has cheated on her. Missing each other, Molly's friends join her at Joan's house in Malibu. Unfortunately, their happy reunion is interrupted by the police, who suspect Sam is responsible for Lou's disappearance.
The police bring Sam in for questioning regarding Lou's disappearance. Joan is hurt in a drunk driving accident.
Molly is happy in her relationship with Sam, but her other relationships are suffering. She tries to get Joan to quit drinking and tries to be a strong for Cricket, who has taken her husband back but hasn't forgiven him. Meanwhile, Molly's divorce proceedings aren't going well, and Sam begins to feel pressure from Molly to change who he is.
Joan is upset with Molly for telling Pappy about how she got kicked out of rehab. Meanwhile, Molly tries to decide between a life of luxury with Lou, or passion with Sam. In the end, Molly chooses neither of the two men. She decides to stand up to her ex, take her divorce settlement, and follow her dreams. A year later, at her birthday celebration, Molly decides she might be ready to start a real relationship with Sam.
