‘The Double’ Trailer Gives Us a Double Dose of Jesse Eisenberg

On Saturday Sept. 7, The Toronto International Film Festival will premiere the latest film from writer/director Richard Ayoade, best known for Submarine and his beloved acting stint on The IT Crowd. To intrigue audiences, the trailer for The Double (above) was released today. Unfortunately for us, it only gives us a small sneak peek into the film.

The film is based on Russian writer Fyodor Dostoyevsky’s novella of the same name. In the story, a man is driven insane by the idea that he has a doppelgänger. The trailer reveals that Jesse Eisenberg will be playing the main character(s), but doesn’t give us much more to go on. In fact, there is no dialogue at all in the trailer, and scenes are instead showcased to the eerie song ‘Grinnin’ in Your Face’ by Son House.

Other than the creepy music and lingering shots of Eisenberg standing next to himself, the trailer shows very little of the plot, or of the other cast members. With Eisenberg taking over the trailer, it looks like other actors will have very little screen time. However, Mia Wasikowska will appear, possibly as Eisenberg’s love interest. It also seems that she will be giving some comedic edge to the tense plot line. The rest of the cast is filled out by Wallace Shawn, Noah Taylor, and James Fox.

The Double will premiere this weekend at the Toronto International Film Festival and will be released in the U.S. in 2014.
