  • 'The Big C' Series Finale: The Beauty in Cathy Jamison's Final Days
By: Lindsey DiMattina May 20, 2013
It’s quite hard to think about our own mortality. As kids, we may have morbidly talked about how we thought we would go — but as time passes, the simple childish chatter that once filled our days becomes a closer, more chilling reality. The fact is we will all die at some point. Yes, it’s dreadful to think about death, but fate has a plan for each of us. A plan we can’t change. All we can do is pray that the dark angel will give us enough time to live and excuse us from this life in some sort of gentle manner. For four seasons, we've bonded with Cathy Jamison (Laura Linney) — a high school teacher who is dealing with the tragedy and humor associated with the fight against cancer — on Showtime’s The Big C. But it wasn’t until Season 4 that we learned that Cathy’s cancer was terminal. The first three seasons were all about the humor surrounding the crazy life adjustments Cathy makes in coping with her cancer fight. But it was more than the comedy that made us love this show. It’s the way that Darlene Hunt, The Big C’s creator and executive producer, and her team of writers were able to evenly balance comedy with a investigation of a more serious topic: mortality. This balance demonstrated a beauty rarely seen in television. At one point, you were cracking up at an irresistible joke, and then the next moment you were moved to tears as the show delved into a sensitive topic like Cathy stocking a secret storage unit with presents for each of her son Adam’s (Gabriel Basso) birthdays that she would miss after she passed away. Or watching Cathy try to get her wedding dress back after she had tried to sell it at a consignment shop, only to see a bride trying on the dress and reminding her of the day she married Paul (Oliver Platt). Last season, we were given hope as Cathy seemed to be on the path to recovery. But then, a cold reality swept in at the end of the season when she got news that her tumors had started to grow again. This season, Cathy faced the toughest of all decisions: to continue to fight the losing battle against cancer or to drop out of treatment and enjoy her remaining time with her family. It was easy to connect with Paul as he lived in denial, only to be rudely awakened by a radio interview to the fact that his wife was dying. Or to feel Adam’s anxiety about his mother’s comfort levels in hospice. If you could have reached through the TV screen and put a blanket on his shoulders as he stayed up all night by her side, you would have. This season was a lot less about humor and much more about truth. There were more tears and more emotional drama than ever before, and then Cathy died. It may sound strange to say, but there is no other way to describe Cathy’s passing: it was truly beautiful. First, when Cathy realized that her end was near, she made the decision to put herself into hospice so as not to intrude on her family. She selflessly decided that she didn’t want her house to be haunted by her death. And then, as previously mentioned, Cathy’s illusions were not haunting. She was instead guided to the light by familiar faces of those in her life who had already passed on including Dr. Atticus Sherman (Alan Alda) and Marlene (Phyllis Somerville). Cathy's final goodbyes may seem a bit whimsical, but there was something magical about this scene. People don’t always get to say goodbye, and Cathy was able to do so with everyone she loved at a final meal. She was even able to find closure with her distanced father. Finally, Cathy had one wish before she died. It wasn’t to beat death, but to live long enough to see her son graduate from high school. She had started to accept that she wouldn’t live long enough to see this happen, but then Adam surprised her by getting his diploma early and setting up a mock graduation back at their home. This whole resolution may sound cliché, but there’s no denying that it was peaceful and beautiful. After saying her goodbyes and living to see her one wish get granted, Cathy passed away quietly in her home. She died knowing that she was loved and had lived life to its fullest. And as if that concept wasn’t tranquil enough, The Big C took us and Cathy on one final journey. We were left with a pleasant scene of Cathy’s heaven or afterlife. Many of us hope that when we pass, we will find these a serene place filled with familiar places. For Cathy, that place was swimming in a pool with her friend Marlene and her late dog. This ending provided the best closure any finale could provide. Follow Lindsey on Twitter @LDiMat. • 'The Big C' Executive Producer Talks About the End of the Show and Cathy Jamison
By: Lindsey DiMattina May 20, 2013
Going into the fourth and final season of The Big C, the biggest question on fans' minds was whether or not Cathy Jamison (Laura Linney) would lose her battle with cancer? Before the season even started, a promo poster showed a black crow sitting on Cathy's head, hinting that death was upon her, but we didn't know if she would actually pass into the afterlife. We are still left asking the same question going into the series finale Monday night. This season, we have watched Cathy battle her with a decision to move into hospice and also the emotional trials her family had to cope with in watching their loved one heading towards death. But, Cathy still has yet to pass away. Hopefully, Monday night, all of fans' questions will be answered and they will be able to accept Cathy's fate, whatever it might be. "I just hope that they will maybe pour a glass of wine, grab a box of tissue, and get to a quiet, peaceful place, and just go on her journey with her," the show's executive producer and creator, Darlene Hunt, tells "And I hope they get to use the tissue. I hope we've done our job right and I hope they laugh and cry a little." The Big C: Hereafter series finale airs on Showtime Monday at 9 PM ET. Follow Lindsey on Twitter @LDiMat. • Fashion Designer Betsey Johnson Cartwheels Her Way Into Reality TV
By: Lindsey DiMattina May 20, 2013
You would think that at 70, you would start to slow down. But that's not the case for Betsey Johnson. The fashion designer, who is infamous for closing her runway shows by doing cartwheels and splits, says that she's still out doing her acrobatics, especially when it comes to promoting her new Style Network reality show, XOX, Betsey Johnson. "Promoting the reality show the last week in LA, I never did so many cartwheels and splits," Johnson tells Johnson's reality show, which premiered May 12 and airs on Sunday nights, gives insight into what life is like for the designer and her daughter, Lulu. "It's been very creative, very real, very unscripted, very much following me and my work life and my daughter and her private life," Johnson explains. "And then it all comes together because we [Lulu and I] live in the same building and we're joined at the hip." First, the show captures Johnson's fashion career as she goes to parties and runway shows. "My work follows me," she says. "That's why there doesn't have to be a script."  Johnson's daughter's life plays a major role in the story, too. "Lulu, unfortunately, had to go along with her divorce, a partnership for her business, [and a] breakup," Johnson says. So we get to see "what it's like to work for your mom for 15 years, fall in love, be a stay-at-home mom, have two kids, and then realize you want to come back to work." But ultimately the show is about their mother-daughter relationship. "The main trip is I've been a single mom with Lulu since she was born," Johnson says. "We're very close, and I just won't let her go — and it's too close for comfort sometimes. That's what the reality show captures." "It's very real," Johnson adds. "Sometimes I look at it and think, 'Someone could think that was planned, but it wasn't.' And it's funny, thank god." Follow Lindsey on Twitter @LDiMat.  Follow on Twitter @Hollywood_com. • Donald Trump Names Trace Adkins the Winner of 'All-Star Celebrity Apprentice'
By: Lindsey DiMattina May 20, 2013
Donald Trump has a new apprentice, and this time the winner comes from the country community. Trump named country singer Trace Adkins the winner of his first-ever All-Star Celebrity Apprentice on Sunday night. Magician Penn Jillette came out as the runner-up of this season. Adkins originally competed on the first season of Celebrity Apprentice, ending up as the runner-up that year. This time, the country music star took home the winning title. Along with a new job, Adkins won $250,000 for his charity, the American Red Cross, and another $100,000 from Walgreens. The company donated $100,000 to Jillette's charity as well. For the finale challenge, Adkins and Jillette had to create an ice cream flavor for Walgreen's ice cream line. They were also asked to create a commercial and plan a celebrity-driven launch event to promote the new ice cream. Akins made $50,000 more in ticket sales for the event, which helped him towards securing the winning title. But despite the win, Adkins and Jillette seemed to end the season on good terms. Jillette even accompanied Adkins on his guitar as the singer performed his single "Love Will." Now that is what you call losing gracefully. Follow Lindsey on Twitter @LDiMat. • Robert Pattinson and Kristen Stewart Reportedly Break Up
By: Lindsey DiMattina May 20, 2013
Bad news for Twilight fans: the franchise's stars Robert Pattinson and Kristen Stewart have reportedly broken up. People reports the news that after over three years of dating, the duo has called things off entirely after spending the last several days apart. Just a few weeks ago, the couple appeared to be operating smoothly. They were spotted out together in New York City following the Met Gala earlier this month, and then reportedly flew back to Los Angeles together.  But, it's in LA that things reportedly started to go sour. Stewart reportedly didn't take part in Pattinson's 27th birthday celebrations on May 13. "He had friends over at his house, but Kristen was not part of the celebration," a source tells People. "For the past few days, they have not spent any time together." This rumored breakup comes nearly a year after pictures revealed Stewart carrying on a hot and steamy affair with her Snow White and the Huntsman director Rupert Sanders. She openly apologized to Pattinson for cheating on him, and the two seemed to be reunited for several months. "I'm deeply sorry for the hurt and embarrassment I've caused to those close to me and everyone this has affected," Stewart said in a statement. "This momentary indiscretion has jeopardized the most important thing in my life, the person I love and respect the most, Rob. I love him, I love him, I'm so sorry."  Unfortunately, it doesn't sound like Pattison and Stewart were able to get back on track after that scandal rocked their relationship. • 'The Borgias' Battle Lines: Could Cesare Borgia Be Creating 2 Factions in Rome?
By: Lindsey DiMattina May 19, 2013
For the first part of The Borgias Season 3, it seemed like Rome was doomed. Caterina Sforza (Gina McKee) seemed to be building alliances that threated the very existence of The Borgia Pope (Jeremy Irons), Rodrigo Borgia's dynasty. And with Juan Borgia dead at the end of Season 2, the Pope's army was basically destroyed. But, the pope's other son, Cesare Borgia (Francois Arnaud), has made it his mission this summer to take control and get Rome back on her feet. After last week's episode, it was clear that the tides are shifting and that Cesare's plan to build a massive army is in action. But, the episode did leave some questions. Is Cesare building an army to support his father or to take his own power over Italy? Until those questions are answered, here is the status on the two opposing armies in Italy at this point in the season. Rome and Her Allies: Leader: Pope Alexander, Rodrigo Borgia Army's Commander: Cesare Borgia is the Pope's son. Allies: 1. Michelleto (Sean Harris): Cesare's manservant who executes all of Cesare's evil plans. He is now watching over Cesare's sister-lover, Lucrezia Borgia (Holliday Grainger), in Naples.2. France: Cesare went to France and annulled the French King's marriage. In return, he got a French bride and a French army.3. Band of Italy's Bastard Sons: The second and illegitimate sons of Italy's greatest families have sided with Cesare instead of Caterina Sforza. Lost Allies:Rome has the advantage right now. Key Tactics and Advantages:1. Cesare won France to Rome's side. This means that he has to give them Milan and Naples, though.2. Cesare has also stolen the band of Italy's bastard sons from the enemy. Disadvantages:1. It almost seems like Cesare is trying to build an army to support himself and not his father. This could create a division within Rome. Anti-Papal Forces: Leader: Caterina Sforza (Gina McKee) Army's Commander: Rufio (Thure Lindhardt) is Caterina's lackey. Allies: 1. No new allies at this point. Lost Allies:1. Italy's wealthy families are now supporting Cesare.2. The King of Naples is now dead.  Key Tactics and Advantages:1. Leaving Milan's doors open to Cesare's army and leaving the city empty of defense. Disadvantages:1. Lost alliances. Follow Lindsey on Twitter @LDiMat. More:The Borgias: Godly Family Vs. • Beyonce Pregnant: New Report Says She's Expecting Baby No. 2
By: Lindsey DiMattina May 17, 2013
For the past few weeks, people have been speculating that Beyoncé is pregnant with her second child. And now, a new report has surfaced claiming that the rumors are true. According to E!, just a little over a year since Beyoncé gave birth to daugher Blue Ivy, she is expecting her second child with husband Jay-Z. The rumors about Beyoncé being pregnant started when she walked the red carpet at the Met Gala earlier this month in a dress that hid her stomach. She then fueled the speculation even more when she canceled a concert earlier this week due to "exhaustion and dehydration." Beyoncé hasn't really made it easy for us to ignore these rumors. Both she and Jay-Z have yet to comment on the topic, but E! says that they have "multiple sources" close to Jay-Z's camp confirming that Beyoncé is expecting. If the rumors are true, it will be interesting to see how this news shakes up Beyoncé's plans to tour this summer. She will definitely have to make some adjustments — at least in the wardrobe and booty shaking departments — to accommodate her pregnancy. • Check Out Morgan Freeman Super Drunk in 'Last Vegas' Trailer
By: Lindsey DiMattina May 17, 2013
Forget the Hangover boys, there is an older set of gentlemen in Vegas who really know how to party. In the new trailer for Last Vegas, Morgan Freeman, Robert De Niro, and Kevin Kline throw Michael Douglas a bachelor party in the City of Lights. While there aren't any tiger or baby thefts (that we know of yet) in Last Vegas, it's clear that these guys are gearing up for a wild night... with Freeman getting an early lead on the drunken misadventures. In the trailer, we see the men head to a club, but it doesn't seem like Freeman does too well sipping on Red Bulls and vodka. The man with the famously dignifed voice gets a little sloppy in this video. We've seen him play the president a million times, but this is a lot more fun! Last Vegas hits theaters Nov. 1. • There Was a Real-Life $1 Million Jewel Heist at Cannes Last Night During 'The Bling Ring' Premiere
By: Lindsey DiMattina May 17, 2013
Celebrities traipsing about Cannes in the glamorous threads and shiny stones should take heed that a jewelry thief is on the loose. According to France 24, police revealed Friday that $1 million worth of Chopard jewels were stolen from the hotel room of a Chopard employee at the Cannes Film Festival Thursday night. No, this is not a scene from The Bling Ring the Emma Watson movie about naughty teens robbing celebrities which just happened to premiere at Cannes last night as well. Police are actually reporting that a thief, or thieves, broke into the room of the employee at the Novotel hotel and pulled the safe containing the jewels right out of the wall and made off with it. Unfortunately, these jewels were supposed to be lent to celebrities to wear to some of the more fashionable parties and premieres while at Cannes, so there will be a few less sparkly stars along the French coast. According to USA Today, this isn't the first time that a jewelry heist has gone down at Cannes. In 2009, a gunman robbed a Chopard store of $8 million worth of baubles. Damn, this brand is going to stop going to France altogether!
