This past week, a lot of the pop culture jokes have circled around the Oscars, targeting Seth MacFarlane as a mediocre host, or Kristin Chenoweth for her height — or for all the jokes she herself made about it. But then, the rest of the week happened, granting us new material... like IKEA recalling its meatballs because they were found to be made with traces of horse meat, or the Pope finishing out his last day at the Vatican. • Bonnie Franklin, 'One Day at a Time' Star, Dies
By: Lindsey DiMattina Mar 01, 2013
Hollywood has lost another talented actress. Bonnie Franklin, who was best known for her work on the sitcom One Day at a Time, passed away in her Los Angeles home Friday, the Los Angeles Times reports. Franklin's family announced that the actress, who was 69 years old at the time of her death, passed away due to complications from pancreatic cancer. Franklin started acting as a child. She first appeared on TV in The Colgate Comedy Hour at the age of nine. She also had a non-credited roll in Alfred Hitchcock's The Wrong Man. RELATED: Bonnie Franklin Diagnosed with Pancreatic Cancer By the 1970s, Franklin had started to establish herself as a credible theater actress. In 1970, she debuted on Broadway in the play Applause and was nominated for a Tony Award for her work in the show. She also had roles in A Thousand Clowns, Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf?, George M!, and Frankie and Johnny in the Clair de Lune. Five years later, Franklin scored her biggest role as Ann Romano, the divorced mother raising two teenagers in Indianapolis, on the comedic series, One Day at a Time, which ran from 1975-1984. Franklin starred in the series alongside Valerie Bertinelli and Mackenzie Phillips. Back in September, news broke that Franklin had been diagnosed with pancreatic cancer and had started undergoing treatment. Franklin is survived by her mother, Claire Franklin, and two stepchildren, Jed and Julie Minoff. Follow Lindsey on Twitter @LDiMat. [Photo Credit: Adriana M. • Late Night Last Night: Christian Slater Is Engaged
By: Lindsey DiMattina Mar 01, 2013
If you are trying to keep your personal life a secret, it might be wise to avoid going on Late Night With Jimmy Fallon, because the talk show host doesn't seem to have much of a problem with sharing his guests' private affairs. That's exactly what Fallon did Thursday night when he revealed that Christian Slater is engaged. "Congratulations are in order to you," Fallon said, as Slater sat down in the interview chair. "You're engaged." Slater responded: "Oh yeah. That's true." RELATED: Late Night Last Night: Nicholas Hoult Impersonates Stewie Griffin But despite Fallon sharing Slater's news with the whole world, Slater was quite open to talking about how he met his fiancee, Brittany Lopez, in Miami. "I went down to Miami a couple of years ago, stayed at this place called Little Palm Island... and this girl came walking along with another lady, a slightly older lady," he said. "I was sitting in my usual spot, eating my oatmeal that morning. This spot was famous for people proposing to each other, actually. Next thing I know, she gets down on one knee and proposes to this older lady. I was like, 'What's going on here?'" Slater decided to investigate. "So, I thought I had just witnessed a nice lesbian engagement, so I was [going] over to say congratulations," he said. "But it turns out it was her aunt, and she was just trying to help her aunt capture the beauty and the romance of the part. She was making a joke." RELATED: Late Night Last Night: Stephen Colbert and Jimmy Fallon Perform a Duet After that, it was a sealed deal for Slater and his love. "Next thing I know we were hanging out in the Everglades," he said. But even though he had met the love of his life, Slater was still nervous to meet his soon-to-be father-in-law, a guy who owns a asphalt company. "The concern that I had was that he would know where to hide the body if I screwed up," Slater said. "But he turned out to be an incredibly sweet guy." Follow Lindsey on Twitter @LDiMat. • Billboard Beats: Bruno Mars to Challenge Baauer and Macklemore?
By: Lindsey DiMattina Feb 28, 2013
Last week, Billboard made some revolutionary changes in the formula that they use to put together the Hot 100 chart. By including YouTube views into the strategy, Baauer's wordless electronic song "Harlem Shake" took over the chart's top spot. This week, the "Harlem Shake" is still at No. 1 and Mackemore's "Thrift Shop" is holding steady at No. 2 — but Bruno Mars' "When I Was Your Man" is encroaching on their territory. "When I Was Your Man" has been on the chart for 10 weeks now. Last week, it reached No. 8 — and this week, it jumped up five spots to No.3. At the end of 2012 and the start of 2013, Mars' "Locked Out Of Heaven" held the No. 1 spot for several weeks before being pushed out by Macklemore. Could we be looking at a similar situation soon with "When I Was Your Man"? Check out which other singles made the Hot 100 Chart. • Late Night Last Night: Tina Fey Is 'Struggling' Now That '30 Rock' Is Done
By: Lindsey DiMattina Feb 28, 2013
We all knew it would be hard to deal with the reality that our beloved sitcom 30 Rock has come to an end. But while it has been tough for fans to face the cold, hard truth, the show's creator and star Tina Fey is having an even tougher time coping with the fact. On Wednesday night, Fey told David Letterman that she is "struggling" to come to terms with it, so much so that she's getting into random fights at Dunkin' Donuts. Fey and the cast of 30 Rock had filmed in the same building for seven years, 18-hours a day, and now, Fey feels lost without her studio. "Now, I'm trying to re-enter society... I feel like I just got out of prison and I don't know how to act right," she said. "I keep getting in fights with people around New York City." RELATED: '30 Rock' Last Set Photo Ever Fey shared an example of her "short fuse." Recently, she had been standing in line at a Dunkin' Donuts and had apparently been moving too slowly — and that pissed off the woman behind her. The woman complained, "Jesus Christ!" to which Fey responded, "Yes. He's our lord and savior, and we should pray." Yikes! This serves as a warning not to disturb Tina Fey before her morning coffee! • Late Night Last Night: Nicholas Hoult Impersonates Stewie Griffin
By: Lindsey DiMattina Feb 27, 2013
You would think going into an audition for a role in a movie, the people who were casting the film would want you to try to imitate your character to the best of your ability. But that wasn't the case for Nicholas Hoult when he tried out for X-Men: First Class. Hoult told Conan O'Brien Tuesday night that X-Men director Matthew Vaughn had him try out for the role of Beast using Stewie Griffin's voice. RELATED: 5 Reasons Nicholas Hoult Is Not The Next Rob Pattinson Hoult found the request a bit "odd," but still gave it "a shot." Well, of course O'Brien couldn't help but request that Hoult demonstrate his Family Guy Stewie voice. So, Hoult put on a show for the late night host in the voice of evil, upper crust baby.   Follow Lindsey on Twitter @LDiMat. • Bobby Brown's DUI Sentence: 55 Days Behind Bars
By: Lindsey DiMattina Feb 27, 2013
There are certain people in Hollywood who shouldn't be allowed behind the wheel (like Lindsay Lohan and Amanda Bynes) and Bobby Brown is one of them. Brown was sentenced Tuesday to spend 55 days in jail for driving under the influence, TMZ reports. Brown was stopped by police on Oct. 24 for driving erratically and arrested after the officer smelled alcohol in his car. The R&B singer-songwriter, who was previously married to Whitney Houston, was charged with DUI and driving on a suspended license. RELATED: Bobby Brown Arrested for Another DUI On Tuesday, Brown pled "no contest" to the charges brought against him. The judge then sentenced him to 55 days in jail, four years of probation, and to complete an 18-month alcohol program. Brown has until March 20 to turn himself in and must go to three AA meetings a week until then. This incident is Brown's third DUI bust. He was in fact driving on a suspended license because of a DUI conviction from 2012. And, Brown was also found guilty of driving under the influence back in 1996. Clearly, Brown hasn't learned his lesson. Follow Lindsey on Twitter @LDiMat.
