  • 'Unflattering' Jennifer Lopez Photo Sparks Controversy: Should She Be Mad?
By: Michelle Lee Jan 18, 2013
"I Have No Regrets!" But Is She Mad About This Photo? Jennifer Lopez talks candidly about her much-younger boyfriend, Casper Smart, Scientology, and plastic surgery on the latest cover of People magazine. But it's the cover image that's really making headlines.  A source told the New York Post that Lopez was "not happy with her photo and that her camp felt like she looked "old and haggard," thanks in large part to the decidedly un-J.Lo-like hairstyle. Some friends even reportedly compared the 43-year-old to a woman nearly twice her age: kooky 70-year-old fashion designer Betsey Johnson (maybe this pose is J. Lo after a cartwheel?). According to the Post's unnamed sources, the singer/actress' handlers called the magazine to complain. But, now her manager Benny Medina is speaking out, defending the pic and insisting that he — and J. Lo — are happy with the result. "Look at the pictures and read the story," he told Page Six. "We worked closely with the editors of People and we are very pleased with cover photo and the results all around." What do you think? Should J. Lo be mad? Or does this not-so-glamorous picture actually humanize her? Tell us below! • 'Teen Mom' Jenelle Evans: Second Pregnancy or Publicity Stunt?
By: Michelle Lee Jan 16, 2013
Teen Mom 2 star Jenelle Evans, 21, is the poor man's Kim Kardashian.  Strip away Kim's mansion, the fancy clothes, the celebrity friends, and you start to see the similarities: for both, their fame is rooted in a sexual indiscretion (an unplanned pregnancy for Evans and a sex tape for Kardashian), they battle family drama, bad exes, sudden marriages, and most interestingly, both reality TV stars are watchers — and engineers — of their own publicity.  Now, like Kardashian, the Teen Mom star is making headlines for a surprise pregnancy. And I just can't shake the feeling that it all feels so manufactured.  Don't get me wrong: it's not much of a leap to believe that Evans could have "missed a few birth control pills," as she told MTV Act. The mom of 3-year-old son Jace has clearly made that mistake before. But this is a girl who's lived the past few years doing anything — and everything — to extend her 15 minutes. And like the boy who cried wolf, her cumulative fakeness is starting to catch up with her.  Maybe my skepticism comes from the very public way she broke the news. Evans' husband (and apparent grammar genius) Courtland Rogers first spilled the beans to Star magazine: "Me and Jenelle are so happy that she's pregnant".  Then on Wednesday afternoon, she confirmed the news to MTV. "I missed a few birth control pills, and found out I was pregnant at a doctor’s appointment," she claimed. "I was really surprised. This wasn’t planned, but it happened, so we’re taking it as we go. Courtland and I are happy and excited now. We know having a child can be difficult, but we’re going to do our best." The story quickly hit the national stage, even becoming a trending topic on Google News. This, just days after Evans' latest nude photo scandal hit the web. And just three episodes into the show's new season. Curious timing? THE NEW ERA OF REALITY STARS In this age of "scripted" reality shows and media-manipulating celebrities like the Kardashians, the new generation of reality stars have become quick studies. Instead of emulating film or real TV actors, they're students of the Heidi Montag and Spencer Pratt School of Acting. (Thank the former Hills stars, who became infamous for their increasingly ridiculous set-up paparazzi shoots, for setting the stage for the Courtney Stoddens, OctoMoms and Teen Moms of the world.) Reality Star Lesson No. 1 in the Montag/Pratt School? The show must go on, even after the cameras stop rolling.  Like the obsessed magicians in the 2006 Christopher Nolan film The Prestige, who lived an elaborate lie 24/7 just to experience the isolated moments of public adoration on stage, the new reality star is determined, deliberate and often desperate to keep the spotlight shining, long after it should have dimmed.  Evans, who got her first real taste of widespread fame in 2011 after a brutal, bloody fistfight spread on YouTube (see below), became Teen Mom 2's breakout star for her wild temper and unending stream of drama. Viewers loved the crazy. And she seemed happy to oblige.  Even when TV cameras weren't running, she appeared to become the producer of her own reality, burning through every major celebrity magazine touchstone at a breakneck pace: a custody battle, a breakup, plastic surgery (she Tweeted pics of her new breast implants), a sex scandal, substance abuse issues, a wedding, an arrest, and now, the surprise pregnancy.  Is it conceivable that the new age of reality stardom involves faking a pregnancy — or even getting pregnant for publicity? You be the judge.  But, excuse my skepticism, Jenelle, if you do indeed pop a baby out in nine months, after paparazzi snap you packing your bags, you Tweet a pic from the hospital and a magazine publishes "insider" details of the birth. Or I guess I'll just watch it all on your inevitable spin-off show.  [Photo Credit: WENN] More: Jenelle Evans, 'Teen Mom 2' Star, Married — Is Her Husband a Criminal? • Starbucks Claims Patrick Dempsey Used McDreamy Superpowers to Win Coffee Company
By: Michelle Lee Jan 13, 2013
Through the years, many corporations have accused competitors of unfair practices. But you don't hear this one every day. Starbucks is accusing Grey's Anatomy star Patrick Dempsey of unfairly charming auctioneers to win the bid for Seattle chain Tully's Coffee.  Now the coffee giant and others are trying to push the court to reject McDreamy's bid, which was lower than their $10.5 million offer.  Lawyers for the Denver private equity firm that put in the very first bid accused Dempsey’s company of creating a spectacle that “may have impeded financing for qualified bidders and creates the appearance that its bid was favored." And the 47-year-old actor certainly did create a spectacle. Dempsey, who's been credited with "rescuing" the financially struggling chain, had television crews and reporters whipped into a frenzy. But is that so wrong?  The actor's well-known Charm Superpowers have carried Grey's Anatomy to ratings success for years (some say for too many years, but that's another story) and his involvement could bring some much-needed attention to the struggling chain.  And his motives for buying Tully's seem genuine. He told ABC's KOMO-TV in Seattle that he wanted to save the jobs of people living in a city close to his heart. "People are passionate about this brand and about what's going on with the jobs in this city," he said. "To keep all those jobs in the company intact, that was a big turning point when it was decided that if you break it up, it's not something that's acceptable." The actor continued, "I think some of the players involved in this deal want to take those jobs away, and you're looking at an economy that's rough to get jobs. I went by one of the stores yesterday and the employees are deeply concerned. That's one thing we care deeply about."  Well said, McDreamy. Plus, could Starbucks win Meredith Grey's heart and perform brain surgery? Highly unlikely.  [Photo: Wenn] More: Patrick Dempsey Rescues Seattle Coffee Chain... • Miss America Pageant: 7 Best, Worst & Totally Awkward Moments
By: Michelle Lee Jan 13, 2013
Miss New York Mallory Hytes Hagan was crowned 2013's Miss America Saturday night at Planet Hollywood Resort and Casino in Las Vegas. And it was a night filled with sparkly gowns, tears, awkward product placement, earnest question-answering and host Chris Harrison. Wait, am I watching The Bachelor?  Maybe the judges can help Bachelor Sean Lowe pick a winner?  It was awkward. It was cheesy. It was oddly sexualized while trying not to be. In other words, it was everything you'd expect from the country's most prestigious pageant.  A rundown of the best, worst and totally awkward moments:  BEST: Miss New York taking the crown.  The no-nonsense (or I guess less nonsense than the rest of them) Brooklyn native felt refreshingly different from the rest of the pack. Her tap routine, set to James Brown, was fun, mugging and she didn't take herself quite so seriously. Amid all the forced smiles and feigned tears, she was the real girl in a sea of cardboard cutouts. When the 23-year-old — who called herself "the class clown" — edged out the more traditional All-American Miss South Carolina, it felt like the long-running pageant was finally evolving.    THE WORST: Product placement.  Between competition segments, the contestants Vaseline-smiled in several music videos and product placement "ads" for everything from Las Vegas tourism to Brooke Burke's exercise DVD. They enthusiastically flipped pizzas, played foos ball, wore cotton candy hats (yep) and demonstrated Burke's exercises on-stage. Eek.  THE AWKWARD! Bad, bad dancing. Think: Robert Palmer girls mixed with The Real Housewives before cocktail hour.  BEST: The talent competition.  Yes, there were some awkward moments (Miss Maryland's overly-emotive "I Dreamed a Dream" rendition from Les Mis). But you have to admit that some of the baton-twirling and piano playing was pretty solid.  WORST: The swimsuit competition.  OK, feminists, go nuts. Probably the most maligned portion of the pageant (but also the one that no doubt pulls in the most viewers), the contestants flexed their abs and walked the runway in their bikinis. But in a world of The Victoria's Secret Fashion Show, it felt, well, boring. Come on, ladies, can we get a headdress, some giant Angel wings or something?  WORST: The crazy questions and answers portion.  Finally, a dose of modern life was injected into the competition but man, was it strange. By nature, the Miss America pageant is a throwback to simpler times. But suddenly, you have pageant judge and DWTS star Cheryl Burke asking Miss Oklahoma about her thoughts on Honey Boo Boo.  "What are your thoughts on how sensational reality shows like Honey Boo Boo and Toddlers and Tiaras portray young girls and their mothers and the world of pageants?" she asked. To which Miss Oklahoma responded,"At the end of the day you have to admit that that mother loves her daughter (Honey Boo Boo)...These are reality TV shows and we just have to take them with a grain of salt."   Meanwhile, winner Miss New York answered a question about armed guards in schools and Miss South Carolina's question? Whether Brent Musburger's pervy comments about Miss Alabama Katherine Webb were out of line. "As a football fan...I think he has every right to point out her beauty. She is, in fact, gorgeous," she replied.  BEST: The "I've got to throw up" looks of shock.  Purely for entertainment value.  Follow Michelle on Twitter @HWMichelleLee [Photos: Wenn, ABC]   More:  Miss America Rehearsal: 9 Awesomely Cheesy Talent Competition Pics 13 Hottest Miss America Bikini Bodies: The Winner, According to You Miss America contestant to undergo double mastectomy From Our Partners: 30 Hottest Lingerie Scenes from the Past 30 Years (Celebuzz)  Child Stars: Where Are They Now? • Mission to Mars: How Space Travel Could Revolutionize Reality TV
By: Michelle Lee Jan 12, 2013
Would Ah-nuld have qualified for a real mission to Mars? Reality TV has tortured people in almost every imaginable way on Earth already so it only makes sense that the next frontier might just be where no man has ever gone before: space...specifically Mars.  Movies like John Carter, War of the Worlds and Total Recall have not been kind to the Red Planet: exploding eyeballs, nasty creatures, all the bad red lighting. But for adventurous travelers who want to try their luck at a one-way trip to Mars, a Dutch non-profit called Mars One is currently taking applications.  The company has already reportedly received 1,000 applicants and will select four future colonists for its 2023 trip.  They've posted a checklist of Mars travel qualifications here and a lot of well-known Sci Fi characters probably wouldn't make the cut. Qualifications include:  * Your trust is built upon good judgment.  * You know your boundaries, and how/when to extend them.  * You are transferring knowledge to others, not simply showcasing what you know or what others do not. Mars One plans to film the whole process as a "global, televised program" — in essence, the most extreme reality TV show the universe has ever seen. And with Richard Branson's Virgin Galactic set to launch some time this year, the future of television could be in outerspace. Just think of the possibilities: Survivor: Pluto. Jersey Shore Goes to Uranus. The new dating show Men Are On Mars, Women Are On Venus.    Of course, there's just one downside to the Mars One trip (besides the whole "you could die" thing): training will last for 10 incredibly long years. In other words, it would be wise to have an escape plan.  Follow Michelle on Twitter @HWMichelleLee More:  Kate Winslet, Husband Headed on Space Honeymoon? • 23 Kardashian Diet Covers: How Kim, Kourtney and Khloe Lost 388 Pounds, Allegedly
By: Michelle Lee Jan 02, 2013
A Kardashian in a bikini talking weight loss — sound familiar? Two new magazine covers, touting oldest sister Kourtney's post-baby slimdown hit newsstands in the past week. If the image looks awfully familiar, it should. In recent years, Kim Kardashian, Kourtney and Khloe have dominated one very powerful area of media: the celebrity diet cover.  The family, who've made a pretty penny shilling their weight loss product QuickTrim, have appeared on no fewer than 23 magazine covers about weight loss featuring coverlines like "How I Lost 33 Pounds," "Diets That Work," and "7 Lbs in 7 Days." And just based on these covers, these girls are some pretty terrible yo-yo dieters.  So, as you're beginning your gluten-free, high-protein New Year's diets today, let the Kardashians inspire you (or confound you, whichever one):                                                                                          *Even mom Kris Jenner gets in on the action! • Harry Styles: An Old Person's Guide to the One Direction Singer
By: Michelle Lee Jan 02, 2013
Now that the name Harry Styles is a permanent fixture on Google News, Twitter, and other major media (thanks in large part to his budding romance Taylor Swift), it's only fitting that we ask the important question: Who is this windswept British teen really? And if you're over the age of 16, should you care? Let's break down the basics: Who: Harry Styles What: Singer of English-Irish boy band One Direction Where: London and now, Planet Earth When: All the time Why: One Direction came in third on the UK version of The X Factor in 2010, make hit songs, he's dating Taylor Swift. And young girls love non-threatening teen boys who sing and dance. There's a glut of teen mag minutiae about the 18-year-old out there: his favorite drink (apple juice), his astrological sign (Aquarius), his favorite colors (orange and blue) and his biggest pet peeve (when people bite caps off glass bottles—OK). But, really, who cares. Here, five actually fascinating old-people facts about the world's new Nick Carter: 1. He loves classic movies. Well, if classic is from the '90s and 2000s. He lists among his favorite movies The Notebook, Love Actually and Titanic. (Are you feeling the Taylor Swift love connection?) 2. He's cougar bait. He dated a TV host 14 years older than him, sparking fans to write death threats to her. 3. His musical idols are actually pretty cool. Styles mentions Foster the People, Coldplay and Kings of Leon as major influences. 4. He has four nipples. That is all. 5. He's totally 2013's answer to Flock of Seagulls. By: Michelle Lee Dec 31, 2012
Now that Kim Kardashian and Kanye West have announced they're expecting their first baby, it leaves us with so many unanswered questions: Will it be a boy or girl? What "K" name will they give their newborn? How much money will the bump pics, baby shower, nursery pics, and first baby photos fetch? And most importantly, what will this kid dress like? When your parents are as sartorially loved/hated as Kim and Kanye, you'd better bet your younger years will be filled with some interesting outfits.  Here, six items we'd love to see on the Kardashian/West baby registry: The Fur Outfit: PETA's never protested a baby before, to our knowledge. But something tells us this kid's going to be special.  Baby Kanye Glasses: The rapper's signature specs, in girly pink. Itsy Bitsy Baby Bikini: For vacationing with the rest of the Kardashian clan in Punta Mita, by Babikini.  Denim diapers, of course.   Baby High-Tops: Because Christian Louboutin doesn't make baby thigh-high boots yet. • One Direction, '50 Shades,' Porn Top Wikipedia's Bizarre Most Viewed List
By: Michelle Lee Dec 28, 2012
Have you ever accidentally viewed someone's Web History and immediately wished you could unsee it? Well, you might be surprised to see what people all around the world are looking at on Wikipedia.  Created in 2001, the multilingual site now pulls in about 470 million unique visitors each month. And although the site didn't release an official report itself, a Swedish software engineer named Johan Gunnarsson compiled a list of the most viewed pages for 2012 and made the whole fascinating thing public here.  Not surprisingly, the English list was dominated by entertainment and pop culture. Interestingly, boy band One Direction made the top 10 list in English, Spanish, French, Portuguese, Italian, Swedish and Danish. (Justin Bieber only made the Danish and Norwegian list.) In German, CBS TV shows were head-scratchingly hot, with How I Met Your Mother, The Big Bang Theory, and Two and a Half Men making the list. In Japanese, a porn actress topped the heap and in Italian, Grey's Anatomy came in at No. 1. How do you say McDreamy in Italian?  But the real cake-topper of the bunch: the most viewed Wikipedia page in German?
