  • Jada Pinkett Smith Finally Addresses That Controversial Willow Smith Photo
By: Shannon Houston Aug 01, 2014
Boris Issaei/NPG A little while back a photo of 13 year-old Willow Smith lying in bed with 20 year-old Moisés Arias (who was sans shirt) stirred some serious controversy in the media and in the court of public opinion. Willow's mother Jada Pinkett Smith is finally speaking out about the issue, and doesn't seem pleased with the way people reacted: "Just don't pollute something that's not dirty," she said in an interview with Net-a-Porter. She also went on to speak about the value of women in our sciety, which she believes is connected to the reaction to the photo: "It's really tough. I feel like the connection to the value of women on a bigger scale has decreased tremendously. Even though you look and go, ‘Women have so many opportunities,' it's like, ‘Yeah, but at what cost?'" And, indeed, the brunt of the criticism fell on Willow and her parents, not Moisés. You can read Pinkett Smith's full interview here. She also opens up about her marriage to Will Smith and their unique approach to parenting and family life. Follow @Hollywood_com Follow @shannonmhouston //
  • Will Octavia Spencer And Kevin Costner Stir Controversy With 'Black And White'?
By: Shannon Houston Jul 31, 2014
Sunlight Productions/Treehouse Films Academy Award--winning actors Kevin Costner and Octavia Spencer are teaming up for a new movie that has a unique plot. Costner plays a widower who loses his wife in a car crash, then enters into a difficult custody battle over his granddaughter. After the death of his own daughter, he raises her bi-racial daughter, until the paternal family comes into the mix. Spencer plays a grandmother who wants the little girl to live with her father Reggie (Spencer's character's son), but there's one particular aspect to this story some people find ttroubling. Reggie is a drug addict—and it sounds like he'll play the bad Dad to Costner's good grand[dad]. Some readers have interpretated such a distinction—in an already-complex narrative—as racially problematic. Of course, we'll have to see how the movie navigates these issues, but—either way—it's sure to spark an interesting discussion. Follow @Hollywood_com Follow @shannonmhouston //

  • 'The Hunger Games: Mockingjay - Part 1' Taps Lorde For The Entire Soundtrack
By: Shannon Houston Jul 31, 2014
Getty Images/Don Arnold Lionsgate made an exciting annuncement for fans of Lorde and of the upcoming The Hunger Games: Mockingjay - Part 1 movie. The young pop phenom has been tapped to both contribute to and curate the entire soundtrack. This is quite a bit more responsibility than what she had going on with The Hunger Games: Catching Fire, for which she covered "Everybody Wants to Rule the World": This time around Lorde will give the first single for the album, but she'll also be handpicking the other artists contributing their music. Naturally, she's excited to join the Mockingjay team: "...as someone with cinematic leanings, being privy to a different creative process has been a unique experience. I think the soundtrack is definitely going to surprise people.”  The Hunger Games: Mockingjay - Part 1 hits theatres November 21, 2014. Follow @Hollywood_com Follow @shannonmhouston //
  • The New 'Dear White People' Trailer Is Hilarious, Important, And Perfect
By: Shannon Houston Jul 31, 2014
Roadside Attractions/Lionsgate Sundance Film Festival darling Dear White People has a new trailer and it's everything we could have hoped for. Hilarious references to weave (not "weaved"), a perfect, succinct explanation as to why reverse racism arguments do not work, and a white guy who believes he was nicknamed "Black Mitch" (he wasn't). In a recent interview Tessa Thompson (who plays the lead, Samantha White) said that, while the title of the movie is “purposefully provocative," audiences will be surprised at how “lighthearted” the story is. Dear White People hits theatres October 17, 2014. Follow @Hollywood_com Follow @shannonmhouston //
  • Woody Allen Won't Hire Black Actors Unless His Movie 'Requires' It
By: Shannon Houston Jul 31, 2014
Sony Pictures Classics via Everett Collection Many Woody Allen fans have had to re-think their position on the celebrated film critic over the past year. First, there was Dylan Farrow's open letter in which she detailed the alleged sexual abuse she suffered at the hands of her father. And now we have comments he made in response to a question about the lack of diversity in his films. When a journalist for the New York Observer asked Allen why he didn't hire more black actors, he explained that he doesn't do it unless it's required: “Not unless I write a story that requires it. You don’t hire people based on race. You hire people based on who is correct for the part. The implication is that I’m deliberately not hiring black actors, which is stupid. I cast only what’s right for the part. Race, friendship means nothing to me except who is right for the part.” Obviously, a writer or director needs only be faithful to the story, but is this explanation problematic? On the one hand he says race "means nothing" to him, but if that were the case, he wouldn't have to wait for a story to require a black actor. You can read the full interview here. • Brian Williams Adorably Announces Peter Pan Role For Daughter Allison Williams On NBC
By: Shannon Houston Jul 31, 2014
Getty Images/Cindy Ord Allison Williams was surely blushing last night when her father, reporter Brian Williams, made this incredibly sweet announcement on the news. Williams will play Peter Pan in an upcoming NBC production, and her father's sharing of this news was perfect: You almost can't tell they're related (kudos to Papa Williams for keeping it so professional), but that baby picture proved that he's just like dads everywhere—just itching for a moment to both gush about and embarrass his child in front of the world. • Are Nicki Minaj And Rob Kardashian Flirting On Twitter?
By: Shannon Houston Jul 31, 2014
Getty Images/Getty Images Robert Kardashian made headlines yesterday when his sisters Kim and Khloé came to his defense over comments ex-girlfriend Adrienne Bailon made about him in a new interview. It looks like all of that drama may have somehow led him to Nicki Minaj's always-entertaining Twitter account, and the two exchanged some really adorable tweets. It all started when Nicki sent out some love to her fans, and Rob responded: U guys give me so much life. Thank you. — PillsNPotions (@NICKIMINAJ) July 31, 2014 “@NICKIMINAJ: U guys give me so much life. Thank you.” All day — ROBERT KARDASHIAN (@robkardashian) July 31, 2014 Hey boo :) > RT @robkardashian: “@NICKIMINAJ: U guys give me so much life. Thank you.” All day” — PillsNPotions (@NICKIMINAJ) July 31, 2014 Awww. Now, these could be read as kind of flirty, but chances are these two were just being friendly. Unless of course... there's more to the story than we know. Cue the gossip! Follow @Hollywood_com Follow @shannonmhouston //
  • Robert Pattinson Gets His First Gangsta Movie From Harmony Korine
By: Shannon Houston Jul 31, 2014
WENN Nobody could have predicted this amidst the Twilight hysteria that started in 2008, but Robert Pattinson is getting some serious indie cred under his belt. Having worked with directors like David Cronenberg, Francis Lewis, and James Gray over the past few years, it's safe to say that Pattinson has made serious strides since his role as Edward Cullen. Next up—a gangsta film with Harmony Korine? Yes, this is real. Pattinson reached out to the Spring Breakers writer/director some time ago and has since confirmed that Korine wrote a Miami-set gangster movie for him. There are no other details at this time, but with these two names on board, there's already plenty reason to get excited about this project. Follow @Hollywood_com Follow @shannonmhouston
