7 Sustainable Beauty Routines from Our Favorite Hollywood Celebs

Actors and actresses across Hollywood are showing us that living a sustainable, environmentally-conscious lifestyle can be as easy as choosing a certain mascara to use! Let’s take a look at how celebrities from Zendaya to Billy Porter are implementing sustainable products into their beauty routines.

Sustainable Celeb Beauty Routines: Selena Gomez

Singer, actress, and businesswoman Selena Gomez launched her beauty line in September 2020. Rare Beauty is dedicated to sustainability and limiting waste when possible!

“I wanted to create a brand that was thoughtfully made, inside and out,” said Selena. “From the products to the packaging, and even the suppliers we partner with… we’re constantly learning and improving to make everything better for you, and the environment.”

All of Rare Beauty’s products (except those that are limited edition) are packaged in 100% recyclable boxes that are certified by the Forest Stewardship Council. The boxes are also printed using water-based ink. Even the shipping materials are recyclable, and customers can reuse the protective drawstring pouch that comes with their products.

Rare Beauty plans to incorporate post-consumer recycled materials into its packaging by the end of 2021. This means that the packaging will be made from materials that have been used and recycled by consumers. Rare Beauty is also vegan and cruelty-free!

In February 2021, Selena Gomez shared her everyday beauty routine with Rare Beauty followers. Products that she herself used included the brand’s Liquid Touch Weightless Foundation, the Soft Pinch Liquid Blush, and the Lip Soufflé Matte Lip Cream.

Sustainable Celeb Beauty Routines: Zendaya

Back in 2017, Zendaya shared her nighttime routine with fans on her app and website. In her simple routine, Zendaya used Thayers Natural Remedies Rose Petal Witch Hazel as a toner. This product nourishes the skin with ingredients that are not processed or unchanged from their natural state, retaining over half of their molecular structure from their original source.

Thayers Natural Remedies is cruelty-free and prioritizes the use of recyclable and renewable materials in its packaging.

Also included in Zendaya’s nighttime routine is the Vitamin E Overnight Serum-in-oil from The Body Shop. The brand’s “Enrich Not Exploit” commitment ensures that its products are made from traceable ingredients that are sustainably sourced. The Body Shop also works to improve the biodegradability of its products and reduce fossil fuels in its packaging.

In 2019, The Body Shop launched a program where customers can bring in the packaging from their used products to be recycled. The company is also working on a system where guests can purchase a refillable container that they can bring back to the store once their product has run out.

Leslie incorporates the Fenty Beauty Pro Filt’r Instant Retouch Concealer and Invisimatte Blotting Powder into her makeup routine. The brand, founded by Rihanna, works to reduce excess packaging, finds new ways to reuse products, and will have an upcoming recycling partnership so customers can easily recycle their Fenty Beauty products.

For her hair, Leslie uses the Olaplex No. 6 Bond Smoother Reparative Styling Creme. The popular haircare brand creates its cruelty-free products while trying to reduce its carbon footprint. Olaplex also limits its secondary packaging and encourages its customers to be eco-friendly consumers.

In a 2018 Vogue article, Emma told us all about some of her favorite beauty items. The actress included products from the environmentally-conscious brand The Body Shop. Harper’s Bazaar compiled a list of Emma’s most-used eco-friendly makeup products, which contained a Kjaer Weis mascara that can be refilled once finished in order to reduce waste.

In her “In The Bag” interview with British Vogue, Emma Watson showed viewers the natural deodorant she uses that is vegan and packaged in recycled materials. Emma also shared that she uses reusable cloth makeup remover pads you can wash instead of disposing of them once used. The Rose Hydrating Mist that Emma used in the video is cruelty-free, vegan, and made from organically grown materials.

Sustainable Celeb Beauty Routines: Billy Porter

Emmy-nominated actor Billy Porter recently shared his sustainable skincare routine with Glamour. Billy emphasized that the 1st way he practices sustainability is by utilizing the plethora of products he already has rather than buying new items when he runs out. While this may seem very simple, consumers often forget to use what they have at home before purchasing new products, which can lead to an excess in waste.

In the article, Billy Porter stated that his routine mainly consists of Kiehl’s products. Billy said he’s been a customer of the sustainable brand for decades and that he uses their face wash and moisturizer with SPF. Kiehl’s uses minimal packaging, formulates its products using sustainably sourced materials, and has made a conscious effort to reduce its CO2 emissions, water consumption, and waste generation. The brand also rewards customers for recycling their products by allowing them to earn a travel-sized item.

Additionally, Billy shops brands whose ingredients are ethically sourced and sustainably harvested such as Herbivore, and cruelty-free brands like Wander Beauty.

Sustainable Celeb Beauty Routines: Constance Wu

Hustlers actress Constance Wu let us in on her glowy glam awards show look with Entertainment Tonight in 2019. Constance’s routine consisted of many products from the makeup brand Shiseido, including the Controlled Chaos Mascara Ink and the Aura Dew highlighter.

Shiseido works towards making their brand more sustainable by testing refillable and biodegradable products. The brand also plans to use product containers that are fully sustainable by 2025. Another eco-friendly thing Constance Wu does is incorporate Armani products into her skincare routine, which are not tested on animals, according to the company’s website.

Sustainable Celeb Beauty Routines: Elizabeth Olsen

In a collaboration with Bobbi Brown Cosmetics, Marvel star Elizabeth Olsen shared her everyday makeup routine. Elizabeth’s go-to products include the Vitamin Enriched Face Base, the Illuminating Moisture Balm, and the Long Wear Cream Shadow Stick, all of which are free from animal-derived ingredients.

Bobbi Brown Cosmetics works to reduce waste with its packaging so it’s recyclable/reusable as well as made from recycled materials. The brand uses FSC-certified materials for its products’ cartons. Bobbi Brown cosmetics has partnered with WasteCare to ensure that its customers are able to properly recycle their packaging materials.
