Standing Up for Women in Hollywood

Throughout her career, Megan Fox has been the target of public scrutiny, but she is not afraid to speak up and share the ways she feels she has been wronged in the entertainment industry.

Since her early roles, Megan has been overly sexualized. An early example of this can be found in a 2009 interview with Jimmy Kimmel. On the talk show, Megan shared her experience working with Michael Bay on Bad Boys II and how he chose to have her dancing in a bikini underneath a waterfall at the age of 15. Jimmy Kimmel responded, “Well that’s really a microcosm of how all our minds work, but some of us have the decency to repress those thoughts,” as the audience laughed, thus proving Megan’s point.

In a recent Washington Post interview, Megan Fox said that this reaction mirrored the dark experience she had as a young woman in Hollywood. She experienced misogyny in other ways too. This is especially true in how Jennifer’s Body was marketed towards men with a focus on Megan’s appearance in the film when in reality it was a story for girls and women. This gap in the intended audience helped contribute to the film’s less than stellar reviews at the time.

It became clear to Megan she wasn’t known for her talent, and she found it hard to discover purpose with the way Hollywood was treating her. She told InStyle that this hurt led her to distance herself from the spotlight for a while, but seeing people now recognize the way she was treated and sympathize with her is helping her to let go of that part of her career.
