Billie Eilish reflects on ‘new meaning’ found in latest single amid COVID-19 crisis

Billie Eilish’s “really personal” new single My Future has “taken on a lot of new meaning” amid the coronavirus pandemic.

The 18-year-old Grammy winner opened up on her new track in an email to subscribers to her website, ahead of its release on Friday (July 31, 2020), explaining: “When we wrote this song, it was exactly where my head was at – hopeful, excited and a craaaazy amount of self reflection and self growth.

“But recently it has also taken on a lot of new meaning in the context of what’s happening in the world now. I hope you can all find meaning in it for yourselves,” Billie said in the letter.

The Bad Guy star also spoke with Apple Music about the song, adding: “I spent years and years relying on having someone. And as soon as I didn’t have someone, I got somebody else. And I’m not talking about relationships. I’m talking about everything.

“Like… I could never be alone. I couldn’t take my own company for so long. And I don’t know, I just felt like I needed that growth. I needed a moment to myself, and I got it. And it was really hard,” she shared. “It’s really, it’s so much harder than you think, to not rely on people, to just have yourself to rely on. And just, like, it’s weird. It’s not something you’d think about being hard. But when you’re in that alone zone, it’s a new feeling. And I really wanted to talk about it.

“I feel like people…Everything is about love, and everything is about… There’s nothing that talks about how being alone is really powerful and you grow a lot and you learn a lot and it’s not bad.”

My Future is available to stream and download now.
