As children, we were enchanted by Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory — the tale of five youngsters’ whimsical journey through the candy kingdom of every kid’s dreams. As adults, we’re a bit more, shall we say, disturbed by the lasting mental imprints from the Gene Wilder film. There’s a whole lot of weird stuff going on in that movie, like the trippy boat ride, the indentured servitude of the Oompa Loompas, and Mr. Wonka’s complete indifference to human suffering.
The latest video from BuzzFeed poses a few unanswered questions about the bizarre feature, diving into some of the film’s bigger mysteries and smaller, oft unnoticed idiosyncrasies. Remember that grumbling geriatrich toting a cart of knives at the beginning of the movie? What the heck was up with that?
